Its time to build a 836 Turbo
« on: January 24, 2012, 06:45:25 am »
Well I just cant seem to leave anything alone long enough to enjoy it so
I might as well change it up .......................A LOT

So here is my next project

As you might guessed I have purchased a ATP turbo kit
I will be posting more pictures as I go with this build but I can tell you that
Mike Rieck and Brian Livingood from Livingood Mortosports here in Lawrenceville are going to be involved..........
as well as Bill Benton and his world renown bat-cave of parts
Sense I am not useing my 31Crs these and the 29 smooth-bores are going to Bills to use on his drag-bike for this season.
Mike will be supplying all the necessary parts and advice  to keep the motor happy and Brian will make sure its tuned properly

The list is as follows for parts
The crank will be stock but it will be balanced and cleaned up
The rods will be Cycle-X super rods
Heavy duty primary chains as well as the cam chain and the rollor and guides
836 pistons
This came with a set of MTC 836 turbo pistons and they have been sent to MTC to get checked out
Mike R has one of my heads and will check it out to see if anything has to be done
Stainless valves and heavy duty springs with Ti Keepers
either a stock cam or a purpose built turbo cam

The Carb is a zenith Bendix which I believe to be the carb that came with the kit from ATP.
It came with the original instructions and a complete rebuild kit and some jets and miscellaneous parts
(this should be fun to figure out)

bronze guilds and anything else that mike suggests
The RayJay turbo has been sent out to a shop in Californian that Brian Livingood uses to get re-built.
There was some end play run out and even it it didn't have any it would get re-built.

I just finished installing one of Gordon s frame modification kits to allow the removal of the valve cover and top end
with out taking the motor out. I did modify this kit somewhat to give me more strength in the area of where the frame
was cut and I am still looking at this.............more to come>

As soon as I get it torn down  will start with the transmission and get it undercut as well as some tricks that Brian Livingood
wants to do for more reliability. He will also do the crank and help with new bearings for the mains and the rods.
Thanks a bunch brian.
Then its Mikes turn

I will try and post pictures as the build progresses and keep everyone informed
This should be alot of fun to build something very much differant than what most of the cafe crowd has
and I hope all of you will enjoy watching this too with all of your welcome opinions. (Good and Bad)

Time for me to go to work as I need to start to save my pennys

Jim

The Bendix Zenith was stock on most H-Ds  from around 71-76ish.. so, lots of basic info and parts exist.. probably had some small mods .
 sounds like a fun build...

Great project. I'll be watching this one as well- never messed with a turbo so it'll be a learning experience just to see how it progresses. Like everyone else said, great choices on Mike and Brian.

Good luck with the build and let me know if i can help in anyway. The guy who does all my machine work used to run turbo funny bikes back in the day and is a wealth of information that we can tap into.  He even tried to get me to build a turbo Kaw once but i was  hooked on nitrous by then.

Hey Bill, if you don't have a use for either set of carbs, please keep me in mind. Those 29's will work good on that 836 that Jim gave me- hint, hint, hint.

If try to ride that bike it would likely spell the end of the line for me. Too much power on a short wheel base bike equals instant weather forecast- just ask Bill about the Cup race-lol.

Should be fun to try it though.

You may want to seriously consider switching to an hsr mikuni. I was running an s&s superB on my turbo 1100 katana but switched to the hsr and will never look back. Your gonna love the sound

X 100 !   The Mikuni HSR is the very best way to go.  Way better metering and way better tuning adjustments, fuel and air jets. You should get a 42mm HSR, nothing larger.  Here is a website i found
that clearly shows how much better these MIKUNI HSR'S are compared to other carbs. My next turbo
project is going to use a 48mm HSR.  kAWI 1300 cc's .

I have been doing some research on the Bendix Zenith carb that was original equipment and it really is starting to
sound like a night mare to tune
besides having little or no luck in finding anyone that can tune one.
I think after all of the imput from you guys adn the Mikuni is the way to go.
thanks again
