Which bike would be best...
« on: January 30, 2012, 04:34:22 AM »
...for my son.

He's 13, 5'8", 125 lbs, growing quickly and has no riding experience.  Bike would be for beginner trail riding and would be a step toward a more capable bike, if he likes it.  I'd like to find something used and relatively inexpensive, then work with him to get it in riding condition.  I have some experience working on older Hondas (garage mechanic).  Thanks

If it was strictly trail riding I would probably be looking for an older two stroke 125 MXer or maybe a 125-250 older enduro. The two strokes are reliable, fairly easy to work on and in the case of older machines lighter in weight.Something with good suspension may also be safer.Sure most of us older guys started out on a smoker 'back in the day'.

Well, normally I'd start him off on something in the 100cc range, but since he's kinda tall, I'd put him on a Honda CRF150.

Docile, light, great fun to learn on, and prolly the most reliable motor out there.  Much more beginner-friendly than any 2-stroker (IMHO).

My sons both went thru Honda XR / CRF 100s, and Yamaha TTR125s, but my sons were more like 5'-2" ~ 5-5" when they were that age...

Enjoy!

Check out http://www.planetminis.com/

Lot's of people doing some heavy modding on smaller bikes like you are talking about.  Many of the mods they do to these bikes will make the bike taller so it can follow as he grows taller and then you will find many engine performance mods.

If you like them on FaceBook, the posts will show up on your wall.  Crazy but that is a forum I do not need to directly go to, it shows up on my FB wall.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
