Swell bowl gaskets
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:02:16 PM »
I recently ordered a set of moulded bowl gaskets from Canada. I didn't want to go through the dilemma of making oring seals stay put when I pulled the carbs again.
I fitted them today, they needed the slightest of strectches to fit, but they were so much easier than fighting the dreaded orings.
Refitted the rack, turned the fuel on guess what? Fuel running out of every bowl  >:(
I took #1 bowl off to see why this is happening. No evidence of incorrect fit, the surface of the carb was clean & the seal was sitting proud of the bowl surface so I couldn't see why it should be leaking.
I refitted the bowl & turned the fuel on again.

To my surprise - no leaks anywhere. It's as though the new seals needed to be exposed to fuel to swell?
I can't say that I've ever seen anything like this before, but I sure am glad I didn't pull the rack off again.  :o

I'm still scratching my head though.

yeah a bit odd,you can drop the bowls without pulling the entire rack though, its a fiddle but i think its easier, was it leaking from the overflow pipes or the bowl and carb body surface?

Re flooding rain: I had to u turn twice yesterday to dodge flooded roads, but no problem getting in & out of home.
Back to the bike though, you might remember me saying how it wasn't happy on a cruising throttle? The plugs were black as, that's why I pulled the carbs to check float heights. I've narrowed it down to the fact that I had solid idle screws in there. On looking at the old bits I took out it originally had the drilled idle screws. I'm still waiting on a paper air filter as well, I think I might have over oiled the Uni Filter. I know I could wash it out & start again, but I figure if I fit a paper filter I can't screw it up.

yeah owen the paper filter is a better more even breathing filter,,i still like the solid screws,,the drilled ones are more or so you cant set them too rich to a degree, you can wind them fully in and they still pass air,and you get less response/feel/feed back as you turn them.
