1st time honing cylinders HELP.....
« on: January 24, 2012, 04:47:06 pm »
Hey everyone, so  im doing everything my self and i hope im close to doing it correct. Im to the point where i have all my parts and am ready to hone the cylinders. Stock size pistons and rings going back in it. I have the stone style honing tool. What should i use for fluid and what pressure? Oh and im thinking three to four in and out at med speed? Any input helpful.
Thanks

I like to use 3 in 1 oil when I hone cylinders.  I'd image any light weight oil will do though.  3 to 4 in might be good enough to break the cylinder glaze.  Your goal is a nice cross hatch pattern to help trap oil and keep your cylinder lubricated and prevent engine seizure.  I'd just hone till the glaze is gone and I start see the nice criss cross pattern.

I usually use MMO or ATF.  It may take a bit of practice to get the speed and back-and-forth motion of the hone correct, but when you're done the hone marks should make a good 45 degree angle with each other.

Fun stuff!

Machinists don't use marvel mystery, ATF, etc....
Use honing oil.  Its not expensive.  Use liberally.
Do it right.  Do it once.
Come on!  We're burning daylight!

If your using the spring loaded ones they are OK as glaze busters and to get a cross hatch.
Honing oil is best but it stinks.
I'll use almost any light oil, release oil, diesel, brake fluid.
Keep rotational speed low (max 400 rpm) and 'stroke' relatively fast.
Cordless drills work pretty good if you don't have a low speed drill
Keep pressure real low as you don't want to increase bore size or make it out of round and/or tapered.
Should be completely done in about 10~15 seconds
