I just picked up a '77 with almost 13k miles and in similar condition for $2750. I think the price is higher than it should be, but it's not gonna get any cheaper. It's better to take the hit now than wait till prices get too absurd.

If that's the bike you always wanted, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Consider the price of all new "classics", say a triumph, at 10k. Consider a $2500 cb400, that you then put 2 k into over the next few years. Way easier then you think.

Think about the value of the bike in general compared to other items in our life. An iPhone retail with case $900, a macbook, $2k. A snow blower $1500.00. A high-end DSLR camera 2k... an so on. All items that are useless after a few years. You ain't handing down a smart phone to your kids. :)

And they don't make these bikes anymore!

I read an interesting column recently by a writer who loves motorcycling his entire life... he says young men now-a-days stand in a line 4 blocks long to buy an iPad, instead of a a hip motorcycle that they could use to tour the country for dirt cheap, relative to other pursuits. I'm sure i'm butchering it, but wow, it really rung true.

It's a gorgeous bike. $4500 is small money for a modern bike. The 400 is one you've lusted after for years. You'll be dead someday. Buy it. Enjoy it. $4500 is chump change for something you really want.

good god man you only live once!! if you want it buy it!! before i donate a kidney to get the funds to buy it. the bike looks in very good shape and is a classic. i missed out on one that needed restored and regret it all the time. this one is a cherry. if your wife ,if you are married is having trouble with you spending that kind of money..just remember it is easier to ask forgivness than permission.

If I remember correctly, a CB400F went for about $6,500 a few months ago at the Mecum vintage bike auction. Hard to compare the two bikes without details but it might give you an idea of a collector price versus the flakey eBay prices.

I bought a '75 Cb400F a year ago for $1,300. It's a runner but no where near the condition of this bike.

It's easy "spending" someone elses money, I bet most who said buy it on this thead wouldn't, even if they had the chance.
Yes, it's a great bike, but do you really want to spend $4500 on a 400? No way here.

It's beautiful. On the other hand, it's a lot of money. And don't take this the wrong way, but it may be a little too perfect for you cosmetically? There are others out there, and you'll find one that might be more suited to slinging around the back roads without worrying about a scuff here and there.

I agree with Falken

That's a very fair price. You will absolutely kick yourself down the road if passed up.
In fact I'll email you the pictures every 6 months and rub salt in the wound.

Years later, you will not care about money you were worried about.
Instead you'll be proud every time you walk by it.

Unless you crash it of course....  ;D

Ditto.  That was my first bike when I was 14.  I loved that bike, still do and actually my favorite SOHC4.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

As you have all been so helpful I will give you an update. While I am lusting for the bike, the seller is just giving off bad vibes. He wants to make me work too hard to buy his bike. And the more I look the more bikes I see to buy. No doubt I have ADD when it comes to motorcycles.

I also think his price is too high for a bike that hasn't been run in 7 years and will need at least a battery and some new tires. Hell this one just sold at auction in Las Vegas last week for $4256! And in my favorite color!

Honda only produced the CB400F between 1975 to 1977. Awesome handling characteristics paired with a no-frills approach at a time when Cafe' style racers were not yet nostalgic, made the Honda CB400F an instant classic. Its sexy 4 into 1 exhaust, six speed gear box and racy styling set it apart from the other small displacement machines of its era. In recent years it has become a cult bike in japan and a collector bike here in the US. This 1976 low mileage survivor was in possession of the original California owner for 35 years. It has less than 10,000 miles on the odometer and is ready to take to the streets with new tires/tubes, battery, fresh fluids and tune-up.

I bought a 1985 HD Sportster that was in his kitchen. He wheeled it out the front door and started it up. Said he was getting a new wife and she said the bike or me!!!
A good check to see that it doesn't leak oil is to get it from someones livingroom or kitchen. Beautiful bike!!!

You ARE WELL ON YOUR WAY TO TALKING YOURSELF  out of buying this.
Explain how buyer is making you work too hard? Sounds like he knows what he has and what he wants for it, if he doesnt sewll it, he can enjoy it longer..

I'm not a statistician, but this is going about 9 to 1 here.  You asked.

I am starting to thing that the 400F was the best looking SOHC4.

I think it looks nice but the seat is all wrong. IMO... Nothing tops an early CB750
