77 550f SS intro
« on: January 27, 2012, 05:24:00 AM »
Hi Gang,

1977 550f Super Sport, 12000is miles, Candy Presto Red, paid a buck per cc

Thought I would give an intro and say how much I've enjoyed the forum thus far. Here's what I picked up late last year. She's going to be more stock than not, maybe light on the cosmetic work, at least initially. At some point I'll probably want to go there but right now just want to get her running great, stopping great and sounding great.

Typical story, someone had the bike, babied it, then life happened and it sat in a garage for a dozen years. Sold to a kid who got it running and drove the snot out of it then let it sit again. Rinse and repeat.

So far I've rebuilt the stuck front caliper and searched for parts to stockpile, drained the carbs and tank, investigated the leaky petcock and replaced with one from Parts N More for $20 seems like a good deal for anyone looking... the old petcock was shot inside. Euro Bars are on deck and awaiting their new home, gotta change that wrist angle!

Long list of repairs to go but not incredibly daunting. It ran when I picked it up, although the carbs definitely need a good cleaning and possible rebuild.

Thanks for all the information on the site! It's a great resource as well as the knowledgeable posters!

That's a NICE CB550F rdp2provia ;)..and I love the color and quality of the Original paint ! That price you said you paid...was that a misprint ?? What a SWEET DEAL ! !
I would recommend that you remove those carbs and clean out ALL the jets and passages and get the floats, etc. all sorted out as soon as possible.Pay special attention to the 4 exhaust pipes and their color..any "bluing" on quality stock pipes like those will indicate an overly lean condition(carb problems)which can damage your valves, etc.; too hot on an air cooled engine is not good and the fuel flowing into the motor at the correct mixture keeps your combustion chambers, etc. cool ;) :).I would adjust your valves, cam chain, timing also. That color reminds me of a CB750K that I had...always loved that deep maroon red !
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.

Welcome!  Great deal, great bike! The 550F was my first Honda SOHC too. The new bars will improve the look. Love the exhaust, those are getting rare.
Check the age of the tires, even if they look good, you may want to replace them if 7+ years old before riding.

Thanks guys! Yeah pretty good deal, he even delivered about 70 miles away a few days after I saw it. A PO knocked the baffles out of the exhaust, so it's probably running hot. It does need some tlc, going to get the carbs sorted out, He included a carb sync too, adjust the valves and get her purring. Right now it's incredibly loud! The exhaust may have been able to be saved, not sure it's got a couple holes underneath but could be welded up. The tires are new. The battery is weak and needs to be replaced and it doesn't want to kickstart but I think once I sort the carbs, fuel lines, valves and timing it will improve. The airbox is incomplete too, there's a single pod type filter jammed into the airbox, top of the duct is gone alog wit a few small parts in there. I'll probably go with a foam Uni? original style. Paint on the tank is not that nice although it looks ok in those pics. It's sun damaged and has a couple dents on the top, one in the side that might pop out easily. missing a back blinker, said it fell over onto another bike on a trailer. Oh yeah clean title too. I guess a mac megaphone is about the only ticket or one of the very few options as far as exhausts... too bad, I like the factory.

I repaired my exhaust with JB Weld, try it. And install a baffle, it needs back pressure.
I just bought a DieHard battery at Sears, only $50.

Very nice looking bike. I have a spare handle bar from my 550F 75 though. It has the internal wiring cut out as all 550F in 75 had...... If you would like the stock handle bars, PM me you addy. Just pay the shipping and they are yours. Welcome aboard.
