Thanks Dave. One of these days I must study the various 500 Parts Lists closely for modifications 'cause there must be.  I've read before about the 500 having a 'weak transmission', 'problems with 3rd gear' and a 'weak clutch rod', reports that I've never understood. Could it be that only the first models had issues and the rest is caused by the ever and ever echoing internet?. My 500K2 [ED, F, G] was built in 1976 and now, 36 years and 130.000 kms later still shifts as new and no parts were renewed except the plates and springs once, some 50.000 kms back, which is not abnormal considering my riding style.
But I will certainly take Hondaman's advice as I haven't greased the lifter (and the pivot arm, btw) in years. Good info here by many of you.

I would look into a set of inexpensive saddle bags, prolly under $100.  Keep heavy stuff there.  Some of the pics show a lot of weight pretty high on the bikes.  I liked what Kong had to say about Murphy's Law.  Do your homework before and at least minimize the chances of failure, even though those are the things memories are made of.  Was in Tennessee once on a 650 Bonneville and had to clean the points with a dime, at night.

Bring a cow along like Goofaroo.  Food source.

I did my first decent length trip this past summer with my '76 CB550.  Most of the bike was gone over, with the help of these folks here on this forum.

After 1300 miles, I really only had a few electrical gremlins which I was able to sort out in the parking lot of a motel.  As already stated, these bikes, if set up correctly, seem to be able to handle these trips just fine.

I packed pretty light, bringing only what I thought I would be comfortable changing on the side of the road (wire, plugs, cables, etc), the rest can be purchased from one of the 48,000 auto parts store you will encounter along the way.

The only things I would add to the great suggestions already: decent gloves (preferably with gel/padded palm area), a $20 gel seat cover from Walmart and cash/CC.

I really believe that touring on one of these bikes, and really any bike, is ultimately made comfortable by a mindset.  Having done the thorough tuning and check ups, and knowing you can pay for a tow, motel, meal etc if you are broken down, frustrated or at wits end, makes the trip that much more enjoyable.

Can't wait to read the ride report!
