Well I redid my gauges and the chrome backer on the bottom had scratches in it and was not happy with it even after I polished it so I took some brown scotch brite and sanded the piece in one direction on the bottom. And for the sides I went up and down in-till the whole piece was scratched uniformly. Then I covered it with 4 coats of clear, wet sanded with 1500 that buffed it out with some rubbing compound. And now it looks like brushed nickel.
