Who can do a paint job?
« on: July 29, 2008, 08:46:08 AM »
I need to freshen up the old CB550. I have good parts but they have have been repainted years ago and I would like to get a stock paint scheme back. A paint kit and decals would cost me $230, then I have to fumble my way through it.

I'm not looking for show quality paint, just a good durable stock look for my daily driver

Can anyone reccommend a good painter or let me know what to expect to pay for a decent paint job??

For people who have done it themselves, how much did you spend?

Try family and friends, or friends of friends, or friends of the family first. The only way to get a real good paint job is to have someone with the right equipment and a lot of experience. I'm sure you could get a fair looking job if you did it yourself or had someone with some experience and use your own or barrow a spray gun and compressor.

I'm not sure where your buying your decals but pretty much all sellers of the CB decals get them from here:
http://www.cbdecals.afegraphics.com/   and just inflate the prices

I'm also not sure where your getting the paint from but these guys do exact matches for stock CB colors, make sure to email them and tell them you don't want the kit just the paint and you can get it a lot cheaper.

www.vintagehondapaint.com

It's hard to say because you don't want to get 2 thrifty with something like a paint job.
Hope that helps.

How about this....

$135 paint kit, $40 decals (decals applied myself). Paint applied for cheap by a master. I have less than $500 in the paint and the bike looks PERFECT. If you are in or near central KY the painter is looking for more bikes to paint.

Nice.... ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I spend about $100 on painting the tank/seat and frame.

My boss paid for the spaygun, sandpaper and polishing compound though.

If you're determined, you can paint a tank with a rattlecan and get good result. A friend of mine did a really pro job with just a rattlecan. By determined I mean if you like sanding.
Sand the thing down properly, and shoot some primer on it. A good rattlecan primer is about $12. Sand until it's perfect.
Spray the basecolour. You can have most colours mixed in spraycans. Spray about 5 thin layers of the desired colour. Then let it dry for a week.
You don't have to be a pro to spray a gastank. If you get runs or orangeskin, you just have to do lots more sanding.
Start wetsanding with grit 1000 untill it's completely flat. No high or lowspots. Do the same with 1200 grit, than 1500, then 2000. This will take you a day.

At this point you can put on the decals. After than you clearcoat the tank a few times (make sure the clearcoat doesn't react with the stickers, this happens sometimes so test it first) . How many coats off clearcoat you put on depends on how well you spray it. If the decals are thick, you need a couple of coats extra.
Then you repeat the sanding process, and finish it off with a polishing compound and wax. I used 3m Perfect-it for this, but there may be cheaper options.

A bodyshop can probably do a clearcoat for $100 if they want to. The paint they use is 2k, so it's more durable than the rattlecan stuff.

i spent 98 dollars total for primer, paint (2 colors) and clear, some 1000 grit paper and some 2000 grit paper and some strainers. i did the paint work myself and it looks killer. i used the duplicolor paint shop system paints.

I just happened to stumble upon this.

I'm going to be sending out my tank and side covers hopefully by the end of the week to this guy. http://www.classiccyclerestoration.com/About_Us.html

We spoke on the phone on Friday really nice guy. He's pretty backed up right now so I probably won't see the finished job till some time in April. I'm shipping new hardware which he'll throw on for no extra charge. He's also going to restore my tank emblems.

Call him to discuss your needs.

$900, its not cheap, but he's one of the best. Suggest talking to Craig to get an estimate. He cleaned & coated the tank, fixed the dents and scratches. Included the stripes, and the black lower section on the side cover (painted). The color matched the original. His customer service is excellent. It was also convenient that he's only 32 miles from me.

I love doing my own work, but bodywork & paint isn't something I pride myself on. The paint "IS" the first thing your eyes focus on, and to me the price was worth it.

For that price did he paint the badges/emblems on the tank and on the side covers?

Looks amazing. I'm looking at a few hundred less and Mark at Classic Cycle Resto will do everything what Precision did plus restore my tank emblems and throw in the safety sticker near the gas cap. Did Craig restore your tank emblems? A new set cost around $275!

K5, that is so nice.  But, alas, I'm going SpayMax 2K.  How bad can I mess up white?

Don't answer that. :-X
