It's still a CB
« on: January 29, 2012, 05:34:11 PM »
I was really hoping to bring a 550 home or that SR500 that got sold from under me, but I just couldn't seal a deal in time on any of them, so I got this instead:

I'm hoping to have a fairing and a cold weather one-piece in the near future. Even selling my beloved family truck there to try to make it through college. Anyhow, let me know what you think of the bluebird.

assquatch20,
That is a sweet little World Beater of a modern CB400F ;D...where'd you find her ??
I am curious if the Helibar handlebar Co. up in Me. makes a pair of more upright handlebars for her...or do you like it more low to the tank ?
I LOVE that blue...all I've ever seen have been the bright red color and it's easy to get tired of that after a while. You Certainly came home with a Prize with that one !
A sporty 1/2 fairing in the same color would go great w/ her and I don't think it would take away from it having more of the "UJM" or "Standard" look to it either.
I have a CB350K4 twin because I like smaller bikes for very precise handling.

75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.

I got lucky and found it on the local craigslist. It is highly clean, but a dent in the tank. Even the dent looks graceful though. I did notice, coming from a TW200 enduro bike, you have to put more arm into turns, but still not so bad. The fairing I'm looking to get is a Rifle, one of the few available.

I think the common mod is to take the SuperFour top yoke and bars or any bars that fit, but it's not too bad of a stance to me, really. I'm not having to hunch over or anything, and I'm about 5'10".

Something I'm really having to get used to is so much throttle and slipping the clutch in parking lots. As well, the insane stopping power coming from dual drum brakes.

you mention having to "slip the clutch" a bit in parking lots...must be quite a short stroke motor;is it like a racy "wall switch" powerband where it will only "get up" above 6K rpm's ?

It redlines at 13.5, and you can wring all of that out of it, but it definitely jumps into a sprint when you let the clutch out in 1st. Very much like a switch. I'm getting more finesse with it though.

I was reading a little about your CB400F CB-1 on a few different Google searches and they said that on a certain(later?)model year they really geared it down so that revs would build a lot faster...what's it like in 6th gear..does it feel like it could use a bit taller final gearing ?

I mean previously only having a bike with dual drums.

6th is pretty tall, you can cruise at about 7k with it at 65mph comfortably, and drop into 5th if you want to pass. From 2nd on up to 5th is the narrow gearing as it seems to me, but it all depends on how I'm driving as well. If I redline everything, every gear is pretty tall, but for good mileage, 5-7k seems to hold most shift points.

For 6th at 70-75mph, it's about 8k on the tach, to give you an idea of what is left. With no fairing, it's a climb to get up to top speed as well.

Hey man, I was looking for a 550 forever, and as soon as I buy this thing, one shows up dirt cheap. I know the struggle.
