Grab with pliers.  Gently twist and pull.  I'm not sure if penetrating oil actually does anything, but it makes me feel better.

Thanks.

How does it stay in there if it has no grooves? What about when it comes time to put it back? I don't get how it stays in position

It's a pressed fit, meaning friction holds it in place (pressed tightly).  You should be able to press it back in place after you're done and it should stay put, but if it feels too easy put a small dab of loc-tite on it.

Do be gentle removing it.
