I look at all the CR-style bikes with an analytical eye since I am wanting to do a CR-style cafe racer.  Basically a naked, slightly de-tuned CR750.  Imagine a CR750 and CB750 had sex, the resulting half-breed would be what I want to build.

The question comes, do I get as deeply involved as CR750Sam and others and go for the massively expensive Factory-Spec internal parts such as CR gearbox and magnesium brake hubs, etc, or just go with the CR "cosmetics", (ie, tank, bumpseat, etc), and do the rest via modern aftermarket sources and such.

That's what I was trying to point out, ours is nothing special and it still cost about £7,000 ($12,500) with the stock motor.

That's just silly................  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

How much better is the magnesium twin-shoe rear brake anyway?  That part intrigues me and it seems that M3 Racing sells one.  For cost reasons, I'm probably going to keep as many street components as possible, mostly because there's little to no need for the increased performance on the street, (factory was "good enough") and even with all the trick parts, a modern Plastic Fantastic will still smoke you.

I do have a few questions about engine mods though:

The factory claimed 67 hp at the crank for these motors.  How accurate is that number?  The CR motors made in the area of 90-something hp, correct?  I would like to split the difference and see about getting 75 crank hp.  That's only about a 12% increase or so over stock, which shouldn't be that difficult right?  Just a bit peppier.  What other parts need to be uprated to deal with the increased power?

Theere were no bids on the bike. I'm not sure if this is a reflection of those that have a deep interest in these are not eBay users or that a clone bike doesn't get the interest or devotion that original does.
I can only speak from my dealing with cars, but up to 7 years ago or so clones were treated as a pox and joke in the hobby. Redhaired step children for sure. However when the prices for the cars went through the roof and all the lesser powered versions the clones were a reasonable alrternative. Fast forward to today. now a clone is about the only way the rich, yes rich can afford a vehicle of their wants. The clones are now at a level where the real cars were 10 years ago.
So there must be very serious collectors for the pedigree examples of these bikes, and just that the clone market hasn't taken flight yet? With where the sandcasts are today, in another few years the sandcast clones will be hitting the road and auctions in numbers.

What the hell is a sandcast clone?  ???

It was actually a joke, but I'll lay money on that soon you will see 1972-1976 or so models wearing all the parts to resemble a sandcast - but for the numbers and actual casings. Early head, tank sidecases, ears, seat, etc. Once these parts can be gotten later bikes will be built to satisfy the demand for the earlier versions. The bad part comes when the clones are good enough to start getting passed off as the real deal. John World is/was selling sandcasts for $21,500 - maybe more now. If some person can build a bike that resembles one for $4,000 and sell it for $7,000 to someone who just wants a bike "like he had" well there it starts. Next the level rises to where the cost of the bike is $8,000 to make but it gets $14,000 advertised as the real deal.

Never think it cannot happen. There are tons of people holding bogus cars that they paid huge amounts for what they thought was the real deal only to be holding clones. And there are several people who are hauling down deep 6 digit a year paychecks to fly around the world to verify the pedigree of cars so a purchaser will not get burnt.
All about dollars and the greed to get them.
If a $30,000 car with $70,000 worth the work can be sold for $750,000......well. And its been done many many many times.

Here is one example of someone who knows a little trying to go fishing. He found a book that stated "L" for 1969 440 hi-po engines. "L" was the engine code for B bodies (Coronet, Charger - Super Bee and Road runner didn't have 440-4bbls until 1970 and the mid 1969.5 440 6 packs were "M" coded)Well in Darts for 1969 it was special order and the prefix should have been "M". And that NO[/b] 440 4-speeds were available. They were all automatics. The 383s could be had in 4 speed trim, but not the 440.

Fake Dart

Several of the most knowledgeable Dart people on the planet tried to talk to the guy but he refused to listen (read, kill my profits) This car has been listed at least three times, and the last had a reserve of $85,5000. This time it was $50,000 as the word is out. The sad thing is that this started life as a 383 4 speed Dart - very collectable.

Another guy just got caught trying to pass off a bogus 1970 hemi'cuda. He is facing up to 42 years in jail. They are finally starting to get tough on these clowns.
The allure of huge quick bucks is too great. And if sandcasts go insane as they are, the clone market will gear up to supply the demand. Caveat empore.
