What's a NICE CB750 gas tank worth?
« on: January 30, 2012, 07:46:48 AM »
I was at my local shop, digging through the boneyard the other day. When I went inside to settle up, I spied a familiar shape, way up high on a shelf.
There sat a very dusty but very nice CB750 tank. It's not a wrinkle tank, but it's gold with the black spear on it. I think it still has the emblems. Cap was a little rusty, no petcock but the inside was super clean. Don't remember any dents or scratches, but it did need a bath.

I took it out back to see if it would fit a 550 frame (a little too narrow at the front), so I took it back in and put it back where it was. The owner said she thinks the side covers to match are upstairs.
She said everything's for sale, but I didn't get a price since it wouldn't work on my 550.

What's a really nice original paint tank worth? I may go back and grab it if the price is right.

What if she can't find the side covers? Sometimes, I get a steal on stuff at this place, sometimes they're a little high on their prices. They do have a boneyard and let me dig around and get parts and bits and pieces, though...

I think Frank is willing to buy at $200.............I just sold a clean K1 tank that needed paint, had a small dent, and had no bottom trim for more than $100. If its really as nice as you think and has very good (unfaded) original paint.........it could get $500 or more on ebay...........Be prepared to ship overseas...........hint: Don't wipe or brush the dust from the tank...........rinse with soapy water.

Any idea what year it is? The tank emblems on the 73-76 I hard to come by. For example NOS emblems on a 71 cost $60 for the pair. Emblems on a 73 for $275!

WOW such low prices......... You need to check this out..

Buy and flip.

Great seller. I actually buy stuff from him all the time.

I hear you man. But that's brand new stuff on there. If he used the guy I'm thinking of the paint job alone is $500 plus shipping. The tank emblems $60 for the pair, side cover emblems another $60 and the little diamond side cover emblems cost $50 for the pair. Maybe 2-3 hundred for the tank and side covers.

Actually as I write this and do the math in my head. I agree it is a little high. But the man has to eat. There's plenty of rich people out there who will pay.

And here it is all cleaned up. Small, shallow dent on the right hand side, right on the stripe. Other than that it's very straight. Small nick near the gas cap and two small places near the chrome trim. There's some grey paint splatter on it, but I can pick it off with my fingernail. Minor pitting on gas cap and it needs a new sealing ring. Very clean inside with some very minor flash rust in a couple of spots. Will rinse right out. I've saved MUCH worse tanks than this using the toilet bowl cleaner method.

No side covers. I did get to go upstairs and it's like a candy store for me. They had a KZ1000 tank up there, complete, that was even nicer than this one.

I'm definitely selling. I just needed an ID and a value.

Listed this for sale here adnd a couple of other sites. On one of them, I have a guy that is SWEARING it's a '74-75 tank. Says he can tell by the wrinkles, or lack thereof. This color scheme was available in '69-'72. I'm 99% sure this is original paint. I see no signs anywhere that it's been repaintred, let alone a color change.
Am I crazy or is he? I don't really care, I just want to list it properly and be upfront about what I have.

He's crazy, don't believe him, it's not a 74. Put it on eBay with a 250 reserve.

It's a decal. Looks nice in person. If it's a repaint, it's a damn nice one. There's not a hint of any other color ANYwhere.

#$%* at that price you got to be nutz!

JTs prices are out of control.  He's a business man who buys up all the OEM parts he can, and wants to make a profit.  He knows that original parts are becoming hard to come by so he creates a sellers market.  Don't get me wrong, his stuff is great but if you do a little research and make some of your own phone calls you can find the same parts for less.  If you want a quick ebay hit and you have Bill Gates type income bid away.

No Bill G money here. All my business with him is done off of Ebay. In the past few months I've purchased a ton of little stuff from him. His prices are usually 5-10 cheaper than anywhere else online and he ships same day if not next morning. You are right about some of his prices. Just the other day he quoated me $275 for a set of 73 tank emblems. I passed of course. His response was that they're not easy to come by.  I found that out when I did some searching for myself. He did however have a set for a 72 for $60.

And as far as calling around I woudn't even know where to begin outside the internet.

That tank was nice, I would consider building a 72 around that, got a lot of the rest of it.
My first 750 was a gold 72...sniff, sniff...

Just checked, and my K1 tank has "J215" on that tab, although it's not stamped nearly as deeply as the one pictured.  Almost didn't see it at first.

Just for fun I will check some different years today and report back some numbers. Might be like the cam R number thing/mystery. Maybe John / Hinomura will check in and have some info from that bat cave of reference material he his holding.
