Gas tank trim?
« on: January 31, 2012, 07:30:00 AM »
Ok so my tank has been cleaned and ready for powdercoating finally. I had to take off that aluminum or cheap tank liner...it basically snapped when trying to pull them off. Do they sell these seperate and if so where? And what is the specific name of these?
* I guess do I really need them after a custom painting?

Tank liner or the tank trim on the bottom of the tank?
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Very expensive if you can find OEM. For my 77 K it was over $250.00 plus clips.

What bike? I ordered these from David Silver for the 77/78 tank. Brushed finish but look sharp. Not going to use them.

If your not hung up on stock there are various types of chrome looking door trim that can slip over the lip,or at least on 750 tanks,to give a finished look to that area.

Yeah.

To answer your (OP) question, assuming a CB750, if your paint job so allows, you can leave those trim strips off. Bend the tabs back out of the way so they don't show. I had mine removed altogether.

I might have one from a 78 550. If I remember it was not very good. Fresh paint would look good with fresh molding.

I'll dig around and see if I can find it.

Mine did the same thing when I took off the original....just snapped into pieces.  After my repaint, I found this 1/4" stick-on chrome that works well.  Stuff is cheap and seems to hold up well.  I think it was $15 for 20ft or something like that.  Did the tank, the seat (sticks fine to my aftermarket vinyl seat cover) and then had enough to do the tank again when it was repainted a second time (long story).  While it doesn't cover the tank edge (i.e. wrap around the edge), it fills the space around the bottom and front perfectly and is very flexible.  Like someone mentioned above, you might be able to find that auto door edge stuff that's wide enough to work as well.  Same idea.

I think I found this at Meijer or Walmart.  Probably at the auto parts store as well.
