A&K fork lowers
« on: January 24, 2012, 08:36:16 AM »
I just picked up a very nice set of CB750A forks, clean as hell, perfect chrome, bouncy good seals.I got them because they were a VERY good price and mine are completely shot, pitted, rusty, need new legs no smooth action.I am just going to swap em,I noticed that the A lowers are longer than the K,Is there a difference performance wise??If I put on some aftermarket gaters it will look almost correct, but I am not a purist and am going to see how the 'naked' look is on my K.I also got a drilled rotor and cleaned and repacked my All balls tapered head bearings while the front end is off,AND fixed my steering lock which has not worked in years, cool.Pictures tomorrow. Also is there a difference in springs as well??

longer forks means greater trail and more stability in straight lines and a little less agility (like how tight a turn you can take with ease)  it will prob be not very noticable....... the springs will have to have a spacer to make up for the lost space in the forks... some people use quarters or washers if you cant find a peice of metal stock

He meant lower legs are longer same as 77/78 K.. should handle slightly better, AND you now can get fork braces to fit over stock fender...

I also have a set of A wheels, complete,When I need new tires I am going to swap wheels.I know they are lighter, but they are 17 and 19.Is this going to make a huge difference?I dont ride it like its a sport bike because its not.I am also going to add a steering damper.

if you dont ride it like a sport bike then why add a steering dampener? if the front end is squirrelly you prob have bad front wheel bearings if you put on a 17 rear wheel you might wanna go up a rear spocket size or two.... you will notice the higher rpms at high way speeds

As I understand it,it could only help. The A wheels are lighter.I ride with my buddies on mostly newer bikes and sometimes I ride it hard.I want to be ABLE to flog it a bit.And why not,it would be a test to see if it makes a big difference. Also, its free.

You can see in the pics how bad the originals are compared to the 'new'ones,I suppose I can use the tubes and rebuild the originals. But I'm not.I'm just going to use em as is.

Assuming everything else is up to snuff, and the steering damper is not being used as a crutch to help mask some other problem, it does some good even if you're not flogging it. It really slows down the reaction to windblasts from oncoming trucks, or just naturally occurring side winds.

And in the extreme it can help temper a naturally occurring tank slapper, which can occur in an otherwise benign situation. Like hitting a pothole at speed.

The dampers are good on raked bikes, let go of the bars, they slowly go to the stop, rather than clanging. Also MANDATORY if you want to run at Bonneville.
The A has a cool handlebar clamp with va hole you could put a csmall guage in,, be cool to have a boost guage there on a turbo..

Got it all together again,Is it me,or does everyone hate bleeding brakes.I have a speed bleeder and no matter what I do,it seems I cant get all the air out of the lines. Its working good now,but I can tell its not complete.Any suggestions.or should I do it the old fashioned way, open bleeder, squeeze, close bleeder, repeat.Heres after and before, new ones are so clean.
