Topic: just got a new (used) tank, but i need a petcock...

the bike is a 1975 cb550f and i wanted a k tank (i like the gas cap) so i got this one from a Dennis (a guy on here)

So, you need a K type petcock - what's the mystery?  No offense, but I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.  The 'where to buy' question doesn't have an answer.  eBay, any of the sites listed in the FAQ, wherever you can find one.  Salvage yards etc.  If you want to post in the Wanted: Parts forum, you might have some luck there.

BTW - are you also using a K seat?  There will be a 1 inch or so gap between your F seat and the K tank if I'm not mistaken.

Go to a Honda deler and order one, brand new, and straight from Honda.
No need to mess with buying a used one, and have it crap out on ya, leak fuel, etc..
Just buy new, and move on to the next issue...

the problem is i don't know what year this tank came from and the petcock holes are different than the one on the bike now.  this one has 3 holes with the outer two threaded and the tank i have now has just the one big hole with outer threading for the petcock to attach to.  if i could, i'd love to use the petcock i have from the other tank, but i just don't know how to get it on there.

You can't use that petcock (the F model).  You'll need a K petcock.  Show us a pic of the entire tank - give measurements of the petcock mounting holes (the small ones) and the large hole in the middle.

It's likely a petcock from any CB500K or early CB550K bike will fit, and possibly many others.  You need two fuel lines as well, so don't forget that when sourcing the petcock.
