Thanks for the support Goldarrow, I checked out your thread, progress is being made. Excellent!
I started the movie theater this week. Stripped off the walls and ceiling. Still haven't had time to get in the garage. But I did get a truck load of lumber in this afternoon so I know what 'll be going on tomorrow. Perhaps I should start a thread for that?

rb I know the feeling, I haven't worked on the 550 in a week,no time and waiting on some stuff.  I do have the 750 running nicely and took that to work the last couple days, finally some nice riding weather. I'd follow a build thread of the movie theater, sounds like it'll be road trip worthy when all said and done, always looking for an excuse to ride.  Good luck on the theater project and back in the shop.

nice to taste fruit of all that labor.  8)  Good to hear you actually ride them once in awhile, to much work and no play you end up like Jack Nicholson in the Shinning  ;D

I haven't had much time lately for the bikes, working out of town and building the theater has been taking up allot of rebuild time. Certainly not as much fun as playing with the Hondas ,but the end result should be worth it, I think. The idea of a sohc museum/club/sales floor sounds like a folly to most people who I tell what I want to do,but I found a way around it...I just stopped telling everyone anything.

rb I figured only the Hondatropolis/Hondatopia construction could be keeping you out of the shop.  Glad things are progressing and like I said if you build it I will come.  Maybe not quite field of dreams but worth the roadtrip to me.

The Hondatopia project is on back burner till I get the porch finished ,wife wants it done, I want to work on bikes.
The local Lumber yard ran out of 5/8 plywood,oh well, guess I'll have to work on bikes right? The Unchopper now has the running 550 motor that I bought a month or two ago in it.....it's looking very promising. Feeling like I have cheated a bit on this one ,didn't break it down since it was a low mile runner ,hoping not to get bit in the ass on this .Tweeked a rack of rebuilt last year carbs that gave me a leaking problem on the red cafe build, floats were a little high in #2, reset and installed. Installed new rear brake shoes ,throttle cables, oil filter nut from Emgo...it looks serious compaired to the chimpy 11mm ones that is stock, new filter, new pan gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets, and installed some 2 into one pipes in flat black, and finally new gas and overflow tubes all around, just because.
Otherwise it was a pretty uneventful day. I'm all stoked because tomorrow is the big vintage motorcycle show and swap meet that I'll attending with my family,it's like an early Fathers Day Car show kinda thing.Should be fun.

Back from the cycle show/swap meet, found some side covers...less than perfect and didn't come with another bike,$100 for two pairs, headlight rim and backing plate $5.
Only saw 2 550's and a single 500,good shape-no price , maybe 6 750's, 2 of which were perfect and some needed allot of tlc.
Didn't see any obvious members and I was looking, sorry I missed you.
I saw so many Harley's that I may be sick. I want to like the machines, sort of ,but hate the BS that goes along with them. Trademark and logo totally oversold for the last 30 years , logo stamped on everything imaginable after that mess with AMF in the 70's that really made them less than special, outrageous price tags and dirty looking lawyers and doctors in the seats playing "bad-ass" for the weekend....... just a  marketing persona that is less than impressive to my mind , poisoning the entire American Legend experience. HD toilet paper may be a way to warm up to the experience I suppose , but why bother?

Between pecking at the theater and rebuilding my front porch, there was just enough time  to prep another 550 motor before dismantling the nearest to stock burnt orange 550. It has been drying out since last August,it's time. So this evening after dinner I started turning some wrenches by 9:30 it was a roller. Lots of silt still on it and the frame could use a freshening up ,I'm hoping to get some time monday night to clean and prep it for a shoot on tuesday.

I was close to home today so I popped in the shop for lunch and shot some black on that frame. Spent the evening polishing parts. I shoot the frames hanging from 3  wires, that way I can detach the front two wires and set the forks and wheel on, then drop the center stand and install the rear wheel. And viola , she's a roller. Took a few pictures and will post them later.

95 degrees today. Put the motor in, two stock pipes, wired the bucket and put in the light, coils , rear fender, washed the dried mud off the tank- looks good, no need to repaint that. The front fender has some chips so I guess I'll put a chrome one back on.

Hot here too rb, not a good day for painting anyway.  Sounds like you got quite a jump on getting this one up and running especially with the heat.  After the heat wave passes I'm gonna get in the barn and split my cases.  Any tips?

YES. Tip#1,very important, when you remove your gears, hold it like a cob of buttered corn, by the ends, equally. Do not try to handle it with one hand, either of them, they will want to slip and they'll all slide off the shaft leaving tons of hands and knees time looking for all the pieces.
There is a half ring and a stud on each of the major bearings, don't loose those, they may want to get away too.
The machined cup on the ends. the one with the stud that goes from it to the case to keep them properly aligned has roller bearings in them ,they are set up in pairs.Check those and the race's condition. if okay , small dab of greaseto make bearings stick to race, and reinstall after cleaning.
Check the teeth and contact surfaces on and between gears for chips cracks and other damage.
go to the shifting forks and see if they slide smoothly on the drum, check for rust on and in the drums ,if clean and slides ok leave them in -don't forget to check the fork surface during re assembly to be sure the forks are not warn and sloppy.
Primary chain check the play up and down ,side to side if really sloppy replace.if you taking it out use your peg mounting rod rearmost bottom engine  mount, screw it in the threaded hole in the primary shaft in the center of the gear at 5 oclock at clutch view , nut  and washer the end and use an old wrench as a slide hammer -gently, be sure to have a handle on this as it also has bearings ,and other fun stuff you won't be wanting to be looking around the floor for.
How slack was the timing chain on break down? If it just fell off easy and had slack, replace while you are there.
Crank bearings should not have excessive  shinney spots or gouges in them check the crank for burn marks ,hot spots
connecting rod can have a litttle side to side play at the top, not at the bottom. oil everything for assembly. And have fun

I hang the frame with 3 wires , for adjustment and for wire failure. I install swing arm, change grease on the bearings, center stand, install forks and front wheel while it's swinging . That way I can put the frame on the center stand and put on the rear wheel. Donor motor goes on a cycle jack with a car jack beneath the center of the cradle I can adjust each movement during installation. No having to lift a frame down over the motor or pulling the bike off the floor,no dicking around in uncomfortable positions trying to find the hole that you want to get this bolt into but you can't get at it. None of that, it all goes in from the side with the oil pan off and the top cover off, easy peasy.

   For those who like pods:
UNI PK3 's , the 4 pack of washable foam for around $50+ , will not be available by Parts Unlimited anymore. And there was another national vender,I forgot who, that also has dropped them from the catalog. I called the factory and bought 4 sets and there are some more left on the shelf says the warehouse guy, if you'll need them get them, otherwise it's singular filter sales at K+N prices if you can get them at all.
