CD, Just a note : Check the condition of crank gaskets on both ends of the crank. The Manual says to change them when you are there. If you find that they are in need of replacement, you'll find them to be a discontinued Honda product....The 1980 650 run the same ones and they are still available. The bearings  in the transmission have also been deleted, and I don't have an answer for that one, as I'm in need of some for that nasty motor I broke apart a while back.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

I took that shot a few days ago and it still looks the same today. But, to answer the question about the dying red bike on the floor, That was during the breakdown of the burnt orange 76 f that just got it's frame sprayed, those parts are on the frame now and it seems to be doing a little better now.

rb thanks for all the info and tips.  I will try to remember them all especially the "have fun" part.  Green bike is lookin great, engine looks nice and clean and love the cropped rear fender.  CB550's are much easier to store than 350 duallies.   Geesh if that's cleaned up how many did you have?

When you enjoy everything about building a bike and have had some to practice on, it feels easy, reduces daily stress while working on them ,and gives me something else to think about when the mind is on automatic pilot while changing out a toilet or stripping wallpaper , or other horrible things like that. If you treat a build like it's going to be a frightening experience, it probably will be. But, when you are convinced that there are few things more rewarding and you're having fun doing it, it feels easy, even when it's not.

I'll admit things were getting a little out of hand.In fact my wife bought me the brown diesel if i would get rid of some vehicles, the 4 door dually went first followed by a 88 blazer/woody, only 700 made. and a nice little full size bronco with a fresh HO 302 and bf tires, and a 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive PU in okay shape. My wife still drives the car I bought her 10 years ago and she is restricted from totaling another one of my trucks, That may have something to do with this parking issue ,I suppose. But I really can't be sure.

I have to admit I've always had a thing for Ford's.  Before my Dad had his own shop he worked at a Ford dealership.  I would go their as a little kid, always road in their old hot rod in the 4'th of July parade.  A buddy tried to sell me one of his mid 70's Broncos but I didn't have the 8K, beauty of a truck though.  I'll be happy when things start going back together, I think I can get the forks, a triples back on soon.  Still have to get the tires off the rims (I'm thinkin sawsall at this point) and then I'll have a rolling chassis.  Which one is next on your list after the green machine?

CD,
Tires can be a real PITA but marking up an otherwise good rim can be worse. I deal with a small shop that is happy to remove the old tire so that they can sell me and install and balance the new one, and it cost very little extra. I haven't gotten a happy feeling changing tires on street bikes, it's more like a self inflicted punishment , we start with the idea that this can't be that hard and end up eyeballing the sawzall? Deep breaths.......1....2.....3..... clear mind....., Do you have a decent place where you will purchasing your next tire? This is one of the few exercises that bring little pleasure when complete, only relief and bandaids. please reconsider your options.
It's seat, fuel lines and points for the unchopper and the almost stock burnt orange 76 f is at a similar stage right now. Then it the 78 K, I may try a bone stock restoration if I can stand it. The pistons and jug will be going into the Hondasaki (my avatar) after that, then there will be only2 left to do.I may take a break and just do some tank painting for a while.

Rb. I know it sounds a bit overkill to grab a sawsall but tires have to come off so I can treat the rust on the rims before I bring them to a shop. If I go away from the rim I'm confident I can do it with out Fubar-ing the rims. I have tried tire irons so not like I'm just passing on gentler means but they are rock hard, dried and won't come off with out doing damage.  Your projects are coming right along. I still have the three pistons from mine if you need/want them

CD,
Yes, Thank you, I am still interested in those pistons , I thought that I may wait to ask about them until yours is running . You never know what may happen on a build ,best made plans and all that, I can wait, just need to be sure that it runs and you won't be using them. Thanks  RB

I suppose your right better safe than sorry, still waiting until it's running probably means 2013.  I'll wait until the jugs and head are at the machine shop and the boring has been done, then their all yours.  I won't be getting much done in the next couple weeks though. I'm moving into a new place so it's all packing and cleaning for now, well that and checking posts here on the forum or course (can't quit cold turkey).  Will let you know.

Made an offer on a 78 K today, wasn't meant to be, owner says he is having a success selling the parts instead of selling the entire machine. Oh well, there's another one off to the scrap heap.

So this is the 76 f after rebuild with donor motor, just have to dial in the spark and take it for a ride.  That's how it looks today.

Really hot here today, think I'll dial in the spark on the 76 k and the unchopper in the a.m. and get some riding time in.
Thanks for the thumbs up guys.
Goldarrow the burnt orange 550 above is a k model. The easy quick tells for the k model is the tank, carbs, elongated sidecovers except on the 76 K they are shorter, and sometimes the elongated seat, on the 77 k the rear light has a change , it's more compact and doesn't have that long chrome ridge from seat to lamp ,a little cleaner but equally as attractive as the old style. When I take apart the next one ,which is a K , I can take pics of the F model counterparts side by side with the K models so that identifying  550 by it's parts will be easy , if anyone is interested, I'd do that.

Just a couple of small differences that'll make it easier to identify the F model from the K model on site The carbs on the left are common to the k, the carbs on the right are PD's, common to the f. They do not interchange on each others manifolds so if you get a set, get the manifolds to go with the carbs note: the PD's have a shorter cast and rubber carb mounts. The side cover top left is 77 k, longer than F. the one below it is 76 K is shorter than the f sidecover located to the right.

The seat on the left is from a 78 k , the other is a typical k.
This is a typical f tank in orange paint. This is a 77 K tank stock. the tanks on the rafters with the chrome lid is typical older 500/550 k as are these.

And the typical below 77 rear lamp and the 77+ tail lamp. be sure to get the rear fender if you are buying the lamp...less holes.
And besides reading the ID tag, internet parts are do not distinguish between the F or K series usually.

I'm guessin that most old timers know these differences that I have posted above, but those who are new to the 550 's may need to know these basic differences and should have a clue before buying parts that don't fit their machines just right.. Hope this helps someone a little bit.

Happy 4th of july folks! So I was getting depressed over the color of the Unchopper and decided to do something about it. The other day I went out and got that hyndia lime green color (metallic) That I've been going on about, and today shot the tank ,side covers ,headlight buckets and a chopped rear fender and a never gonna be chrome again front fender that lime green. The other tanks and side covers belongs to my avatar who's rebuild is coming up soon. I really like this color...it makes me happy.
While i was getting paint anyways, I found a 2012 nissan red that is just beautiful and one of the red bikes will have that on it this year.
Then the 77 k with that Garnetty root beery type color that I just can't warm up to but I wanted to redo stock....well maybe not exactly stock. Thrulitrot or something like that ,a 2008 Mercedes color. I'm thinking  it's close enough to stock for those less informed and a nice variation in the same color range. that said, I hope it turns out as nice as I say. Guests are here gotta go.

These are some pics of the Unchopper in the new Hyndia lime green paint.

This color is so vibrant, these photos just doesn't do it justice.
Have a seat to make, sync the carbs and finish up the front brake you may notice an other than stock master cylinder, I think some of these stock ones have been cleaned up so many times in the last 40 years that the openings are just a little larger than the new kits will allow for. Thus leaving a slight leak up on the bars that ultimately waste a perfectly good paint job on the tank ruining an otherwise perfectly good day.
