75 550F exhuast gasket--No longer available
« on: February 02, 2012, 05:30:19 PM »
I need an exhaust gasket for my75 550F. The gasket that goes at the end of the headers.. Where can I get on? Or should I go to a muffler shop and see what they can do? I really do not want to get the lossa muffler welded onto the header...

Is there one? Is it the stock system?

its like that #3 ring a copper circle they come in the gasket sets and can be bought individually just make sure youve picked the old one out as they blend into surroundings and might get another on top of the old one if you dont look close at it or by the sounds of it are you talking about the end collector to the actuall muffler

Are you talking about the copper gasket? I've seen loads of websites selling them, ebay too I think.

I believe he's talking about where the header slips into the muffler. I seem to remember one on my stock 550F, probably made out of a asbestos material.
I bought some high temp gasket material and planned to make my own but didn't need it.
(local auto parts store will have it). You will need a clamp.
Let's see a pic of your Lossa, heard good things about 'em.

Suzuki GT 3 cylinder two stroke bikes and other smokers of the period used that type of clamp and a rubber gasket to join the headpipes with the muffler assemblies. Probably a longshot though to get a proper fit.

I know what you mean, had them on my S1 Kawa.

Yes, Stev-o hit it on the head...... The gasket that fit on the end of the header.. Where the header and exhaust meet. With the old one on the exhaust wouldn't fit.... I am going to bring it to a muffler shop and see what they can do. I really do not want to weld it..... Here is the set up...

If you look at the end of the second pitcure you can see the gasket has been removed. I wouldn't doubt if the gasket was made out of asbestos.

The ones on my Kawa were definately some kind of rubber. I think I even used inner tube as a substitute once.

Thinking it may wiggle and not be sealed properly.

I tried gasket paste.  I tried muffler repair tape( the red stuff from autozone) and then both.  Too much vibration I think eventually cracks the seal and then the leak destroys the attempted seal.

Maybe it might be best to weld? Why don't you want to?

Weld? I was told it will cause the chrome to discolor. I am leaving for my buddies in a bit with it and may end up welding it tonight... A concern also when welding, since it doesn't go over snuggly, won't it vibrate?

Have you talked to the counter personnel at the auto parts store?  How about sheet exhaust gasket material.  Cut to size and wrap the header outlet with a single layer.  It used to be available in different thicknesses but who knows anymore.  Just a thought.  I agree, welding will screw up what looks to some really nice chrome.  The only way you would get a good seal is a solid bead all the way around.  That's a lot of heat and future rust.

I have used aluminum tape to stop small leaks. If Lossa sold you that muffler as a direct fit to the stock 550F header, I would call them and offer them the opportunity to figure it out.

I noticed  www.davidsilverspares.co.uk   is doing the original gasket. Whether this is any use to you I don't know.
