It would help to know the model/year bike and type of carbs.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Sorry, I don't have any 500 carbs to look at. On the 750 the spring mounts to a small plate with a hole in the middle. The plate is located between carbs 2&3 and fits between the carbs in the same place that the fuel lines connect between 1&2,3&4 carbs. Possible the plate got bent and fell out depending on how hard you "knocked" the spring off?

I have a '73 Cb500 also. . . the spring hooks up on a little metal thingy that looks like the metal on a pencil eraser. . . it's held in between carbs 2 and 3. The little bugger is really hard to get to stay in while trying to line up the chokes and mounting on the carb backing plate.  You could use a piece of a bolt cut off I bet.  Maybe expoxy it into carb 2 and then it wont fall out when you put them back together on the mounting bracket.

thats it!
