81 carbs vs 82 carbs on a CB650
« on: July 19, 2006, 03:08:49 PM »
From the books and manuals I have, it states the slow jets are replaceable on the 82 carbs but not the 81's. As I have 81 carbs, I can attest to that, however never having seen the insides of a 82 carb, how would I know the difference? On E-Bay right now is a set of 82 carbs (so the ad states) but they look identical to the 81's I currently have. Does any one have pictures they could post or point to a web site where I could see for myself?

Thanks!

Tom

maybe the # stamped on the outside.   I never had or worked on a 82 and always thought they where the same.

If your 81 model carbs are the CV carbs with the fuel shut off valve on the top of the carb rack, the 82 model carbs should fit. The cylinder head and spacing between the intake ports are the same on all the 650's with CV carbs as far as I know.
The Haynes manual do show the screw in pilot jets in the parts diagram for the 650SC (UK model) CV carbs btw.

Yes, I have CV carbs, I just would like a set that I could replace the slow jets on as the 81's clog very easily and are a real bear to clean out.

So back to my question, how do I know the carbs I see on EBay are in fact 82's? The seller is not much help as he does not know the difference and the picture he added to the ad was from a distance and angle that make it impossible to clearly see the jets.

There should be a number stamped on the outside of one of the carbs.

The 82 Nighthawk carbs should have the number VB44 C and your carbs VB44 A.
