Thanks guys. Sorry about the bad photos posted yesterday. Here is a better one. The lower end is ready to go after assembly, realization of grave mistake, disassembly, and reassembly. On the bright side I can assemble the transmission from memory now
I broke a piston ring today while installing otherwise I would have the top end on too. Tomorrow I will get the side covers filled, wired, and buttoned up. Literally EVERYTHING is ready to go on the bike including polished and rebuilt carbs, just need to finish this engine!
In the last couple months I got a lot of help from members here and came up with a comprehensive list of parts for the engine rebuild. Seeing as the bike was complete and ready to go besides an engine, I focused on that part of the project while the rest of the bike waited. I asked a lot of questions about the rebuild in various threads but I'll try to keep further progress here for anyone who likes 400s and is interested.
In the meantime something interesting did happen and I got another bike that ended up having cam chain tensioner issues. It was a pretty clean bike otherwise and I was sad to find out that I screwed up and bought another bike that needed an engine rebuild. but I did get to harvest some nice parts from it while I had it, like a brand new exhaust system which I assume is from DSS, and the center stand lift handle. Here's a pic of that exhaust next to mine. I swapped mine onto the bike and sold it. You can check out that bike here if you want.
