What Year really is my CB750?
« on: February 02, 2012, 05:00:36 PM »
Newbie here so please bare with me. This has been some discovery process since I picked her up this past July. I just ordered a new tank cap and latch and side cover emblems.  The cap I received is close but just a tad shaped differently and not chrome and the latch has a lock. The cap I have is chrome and no lock on the latch. The side covers emblems match the old emblems but when I removed them the side covers appear to be from a 72 because they have the 750 four embossed into the plastic. The build date on the neck is 3/73. I know with Triumph if your bike was built in October of 05 for example it's publicized as an 06. Is that the case with my CB?

Give us the first few digits of your VIN, and engine #, but it sounds like you've got a K3 bike.  In America, it may have been titled as a 1974 if that's the year it was sold, but we go by the VINs here.

Things like tanks, and side covers can be changed a long time ago without any indication.

All the gas caps come with a lock now. Honda discontinued the thumb latch and had a recall to replace them with locks for safety.
All the side covers (71-76) have the original 750four shape embossed on them. Honda just designed the new badge to cover the embossing and drilled new holes.

And the cap should be chrome right? I'm looking at through the bubble wrap and I'm when I put it next to my cap it did not match up perfectly.

Yes, the cap should be chrome.
I haven't seen one of the new caps that Honda is selling now, I'm sure someone else here has and can tell us if the the new caps exhibit any differences from the old ones.

btw, intact original thumb latches are valuable, as a lot of them broke and Honda replaced them with the lock.
Reproductions are pricy.
If yours is in good shape, hang on to it.

The gas cap latch is a safety issue, you should sell it to me so I can dispose of it properly!

I was quoated $152 for a new one. I think I'll hold onto it. I may even leave it on the bike with the new cap.

Thanks for all the input fellas

The majority of us hate the looks of those dang locks on the gas tank. The secret is to push down on the gas cap a bit before you push down on the latch. To close it push down on the latch a bit then push the cap down and release the latch. Sounds stupid, but it takes a lot of pressure on that little latch to release the gas cap if you do not push the cap down. That is how these expensive things get broke.

Doesn't sound "stupid" to me, Johnie!  I just had my KO serviced to run on the road after many years in storage - bought it new in July of 70 - and I sure don't want that tank cap to give up on me now.  I'm gonna take your advice and treat it with care from now on.  Thanks for the tip.

Welcome to the boards Clarence. We are glad to have you here. Did I miss some pics of your KO? We really like pics here. Cool you are the original owner of that KO. Can not wait to see it. My hat is off to you for holding onto it all those years.

This thread: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=73491.0  has an image of the original recall notice.
Since it was only sent to original owners a lot of bikes didn't get the "upgrade".
Especially if the bike never went into a Honda shop.

I have had my K3 since new. I think it was around the mid 70's I did get a recall on the gas cap. Someone explained to me it was to prevent riders from checking their gas level while riding. Well, first I didn't care for the looks of it and 2nd, I did check my gas from time to time while riding. So I didn't take it in and have it changed. It was my call, my bike and I really didn't see the safety concern. I have never had a problem getting my cap open when I wanted to. I can hold the cap down while pushing the release down with one hand, opening or closing.

I sent the tank and side covers to Mark over at Classic Cycle Restoration in WV. He's pretty backed up so I should hopefully have them back some time in April. That's what started this whole query. I'm going to use the new cap and keep the old latch on there. I too am not a fan of the locking latch. I'm going to try and return it.

I may be interested in buying it if you can't return. Where did you get it?
