Murray Engineering
« on: February 07, 2012, 12:15:07 AM »
Some of the drag racers on the forum (or perhaps THE dragracer) has dealt with Murray Engineering? I'm interested in Mr. Murray's sidewinder for the GS and I experienced difficulties contacting him.
From what I read he isn't too keen on the internet and emails etc. but the pipes are quite well fabricated?

I received one email from him saying he still builds a pipe for my bike and it might solve my front tire-header clearance issues but never got a pic or a price and I gave up after a few emails.

Any ideas highly appreciated.

Thanks!

Seems his website is still under construction

http://www.murrayexhaust.com/index.htm

I'll ask elsewhere.

I also heard no one else sells his pipes, they are made to order and can only be bought from the man himself.

Juha, I've asked on dragbike.com but have had to be selective in my wording.
Last night I tried to give Big Jims details to a guy who wanted some welding doing or info into could/would it work and got a telling off from one of the mods for advertising. >:(

Yes, Murray basically makes pipes to order. The only way to access them is by phone. I never had any success getting to him in any other way. His pipes are expensive but they are some of the best.

Thanks for the offer but my bike won't have enough ground clearance after the latest modifications to run anything but a sidewinder.

Juha, whats wrong with running the Vance and Hines Pro Pipe (sidewinder) on your bike?? Right now its the cheapest and easiest pipe to source. It costs about $220 US and can be bought off several vendors on Ebay. I just bought one for my KZ project. Not the most high quality but it will get the job done.  Or, you can check the Ebay auctions for a used pipe- i see them in good shape all the time. Also look at the Dragbike.com ads because i have seen a few used ones there as well.

I've used the V&H PCO pipe for two seasons and #3 and #4 headerpipes are very close to the front tire, even hit it when I land a wheelie or brake and turn at the end of the track.

Stock frame, GSX-R 1100 -89 forks and 17" wheel, it's a tight fit.

Maybe the other V&H you pointed out uses less space?

There's always the chance to cut and weld the one I have but they are no longer available from V&H so I'm trying to find another way...

In the last race of the season 2011 I had a GSX-R header fitted but it hangs very low, lot lower than frame rails.

Ahhh, now i get the picture. An unraked frame is usually an issue with a sidewinder in most cases anyway due to the very clearance issue you describe. I remedied that somewhat on my GSXR by using a low profile front tire that many of the grudge racers around here use. I will see if i can find the exact brand/size and post it for you. Perhaps it will help resolve your issue versus buying a new pipe. Its worth a shot if your pipe is still good. $600 plus versus $90 = no brainer.

Ok, my friend. I used this tire on my GSXR and i just installed it on my old school KZ. I bought it from Spencer Cycle but i'm sure you can source it closer to you if you decide to go this route versus the new pipe. It will be shorter than what you have now.

Looks like we missed out again. Make a post over on Psychobike about a low profile V rated tire, i'm sure they have the answer for you.  I'll be on the lookout for a stepped, spyder pipe for you. I have one myself but its for an upcoming dragbike project for the wife.

All true about the Murray...ran one on my Busa before I went turbo...had to call him direct...talked to his wife I think and yes he makes them on his Property...right out back. Nice construction and great value...once you get one of course.

I just realized that the advertiser is an acquantence of mine. He is a multi time Top Gas champion for SEMDRA.

When you get ready to buy, let me know and maybe i can call Dennis at Murray exhaust to get a quote for you.

Good luck with the season.
