I took it in to get powdercoated and the lock or whatever that part is melted. Im a bit upset now. Now what can I do? Is the tank junk??? He won't charge me to powder but now I'm a bit upset cause the wheels and swingarm are all gonna be powdered barin red. Any help on this one??? Is the tank garbage?

There is a screw on the side of that tank lock. If you can get it out you may be able to still get it off.Guess not a good idea to leave that stuff on,seems the coater would have realized that also.

Your powder coater is an idiot.
It looks like he may have been trying to burn the old paint off.
The cap and lock should have been removed but it doesn't take that kind of temperature to cure powder coating. (Or remove paint!)
(Pot metal melts around ~750+ degrees, depending on the alloy.)

That's likely where he grounded it. Bad ground, or wrong location.

Should get to 400 degrees F. IK dontknow whay anyone woulkd assume that you could just powder coat over a lock and still get it to work.. How did your rubber seal hold up

Actually the "Tank" should not be hurt. It's steel. The attached bits can be replaced. Looks like from the empty cap you or the coater removed the insides. Hopefully before heat was applied. The latch is toast but can be removed and replaced. The original latch is hard to come by (expensive) but the replacement locks can be found. The petcock, if toasted as well, can be replaced with aftermarket. I would remove the cap, latch, and petcock if present, and send it back to have it powder coated to match. The other bits you just need to replace. Mark this up to a lesson learned. When you farm work out, don't assume the shop/tech is going to take care of things for you that you should have taken care of yourself.

I took off the petcock and gas gasket. I didn't know I should take off this part. I'm afraid to bring it back now once I get it off...they said it goes back in for the 2nd powder ......blah blah blah ..stuff. my local vintage shop said they're fukn idiots...and that shouldn't have been that hot...he also said it might have been dipped in some acid to remove everything?? Should I just take this to a body shop now?

Ask your vintage bike shop to recommend someone. Make sure whoever you use has 1) experience pc-ing bike parts; and 2) has a little common sense. The tank is definitely still good... but it will take some work and $$ to get it back to where it was.

Think about if you had a bolt or screw with a melted nut on it that may be very hard to turn if at all. Might be time for a dremmel with a very steady hand don't want to grind into the tank

But if that happens it is in the best place on the tank and don't nick the filler pipe. Sorry that happen that so called PC needs to go to school and learn on his own stuff. It is NOT enough to just offer a recoat. Some people think you can learn everything from a book but you also need hands on. I don't think it would be a bad idea to tell us who the hell he is so no one else uses him or her or it. Yes things happen people will make mistakes but he should man up and pay to have every thing fixed buy a real PC.

Is it a pefect tank? is there filler on it.
With all fairness, both the OP and the PC may have thought it was actually steel.. the cap is on that one..

Whats strange though is the pin that holds the cap on is not steel is it ? ,seems the ones I have removed may have been aluminum or lighter material so they can be flared on the end when mounting. That should be toast also so maybe it was more of an electrical problem just on the lock or that pot metal haveing a bad chemical reaction to a cleaner ??.

The pin is steel, pretty sure... they take a bit of abuse.. if you bang the cap down they can bend. my latch broke so I drilled thend of the pin and hold it in my teeth when I put gas in.. then pop pin in and close..

Probably right Frank. I have replaced that cap pin in the past with a tiny long stainless steel bolt and nut and has worked well also.Another repair option for anybody out there.

The manager texted me after I spoke about this. He said he will work this out and we will speak about a way to fix the problem in person. I just don't want to now pay for the damage and have to get it replaced.

There's nothing wrong with having sex with your sister either I suppose, but that doesn't mean its a good idea. And seeing as how I'm sitting here and can't remember ever having seen anyone powder coat a tank and never heard anyone mention they might be thinking about powder coating at tank and can't think of one good reason on earth to powder coat a tank I just thought it was a perfectly reasonable question.

i am usally a calm sensible person..but... if the person that did this will not pay to fix it i would take him out back and take it out of his hide!! no true excuse for stupid. i have seen these latches on flea bay..they are not non existant. as far as powder coating a tank..cool idea, never thought of that one. guess powder caoting is just another form of paint so to speak.
