Aw, Tacoma isn't as bad as it used to be. It hardly smells at all any more!

Reminds me of a joke.  A guy is in the back seat with his girlfriend going at it hot and heavy.  She says, "Kiss me where it stinks."  So he hops into the front seat and drives her to Tacoma.

I've heard that joke used for some other towns, but Tacoma was the subject of it when I first heard it over 40 years ago.  Up until the mid 70's the town smelled of rotten eggs and made your eyes burn, then gradually got better as time went on.  Paint peeled off houses in those days.  It was nasty.

Haven't checked this site for some time since I bought a new 2010 Connie.  Good to see that there's still some activity in the PNW.  Wonderful place with lots of diverse terrain to ride in.

Ofreen, damn that's funny!

Recently they've been tossing around renaming Mt Rainier to a native name. One of the names is Tacoma but I've always heard the native name for the mountain was Tahoma, Tacoma was the name they gave the sulfur smell coming from the crater.   ;D

One of the best day rides in the country is the RAMROD route. Ride Around Mt Rainier in One Day. Phenominal roads and scenery.

Come down in June when there's lots of daylight and get yourself a cheap motel room out on Aurora Ave, then head home first thing in the morning. At 5 am traffic will be going the other way, you could be back in B'ham in time for work.

The  most memorable cheap motel I remember in Seattle was downtown with a neon sign, and if I remember correct it  was south from pike place. The green tortise is something to check into.  If I remember it was $23 a night and you had to do a "chore." No problemo. I think they were moving around the corner to even closer to the PPM and I really want to see what they have done there. They were working hard on it . I think htey were on 2nd south of Pike when I was last there, but reasonable lodging and all cool people from everywhere staying over.

If you are traveling with just a backpack that is where to go if you don't mind roomates. It's in the middle of everything Seattle and cheap. I think the private room was about double.

You in Yakima? Take HWY12 to HWY 123. Then take the Stevenson Canyon entrance. Take 161 through Eatonville and follow signs to Orting. Then to Enumclaw and take HWY410 over Chinook Pass back to Yakima. That would make a nice day trip on twisty highways.
You ever ride up the Yakima canyon to Ellensburg then HWY 10 to Cle Elum? I used to fly fish the yakima and always thought that would be super nice on two wheels.

Sounds great. got a link to a map or something?

That's great road thru Yakima Canyon on a bike.  The only drawback is the low speed limit, which can be enthusiastically enforced.

i've been flashed and tossed a beer simultaneously.   8)
if you ride out that way, keep going south to Naches, and then back west on the 410 to Rainier/Greenwater.
Nice loop on a hot summer day.

And the 30 miles of bicycles ever nice day!

I went north though the canyon on a camping trip last summer, and I swear I spent more time in the southbound lane than the North because of the bikes.

I bet some of the cycle riders **** there pants when I drove by. My truck really reverberates in that rocky canyon. :D

I think to say No More smell is a stretch but it does small a lot better than it used to :)

One of my favorite day rides is Seattle to Tacoma via the Dash Point Road to the Tacoma waterfront for a bite to eat. Then to Point Defiance ferry and jump on vashon island to the Fauntleroy ferry on the north end and back home to West Seattle. Lot's of good roads and great scenery.

Speaking of rides, it's supposed to be mid 50s and sunny on Sunday 3/4, who's shaking the dust of their hondas? I was about to go for a quick ride last weekend with another member but as soon as I got my bike cleaned up, de-winterized, started and warmed up, my helmet on, the friggin sky opened up, hail, rain, wind, you name it. I pulled back into the garage and we decided to wait for another day.
