Hello from Michigan ! Brrrrrrrrr.
« on: January 21, 2012, 11:26:08 AM »
Cold day here, 18 degrees, perfect time to join this forum.......I've had CB750's ever since fall of 1969, when my brother traded in my Triumph 500 in for that new Honda , you know the one with the overhead cam , front disc brake and wow!  an electric starter (shades of the future!)    Like many of you older members, I've acquired many a parts bike over the years....the two models I have left, 1971 and 1972 haven't been on the road for ove 6 years....but maybe this is the year to DO IT !.....hmmmm,    we'll see :)

Welcome. It has been a bit brisk here the past few days. Take heart, warm-up coming tomorrow and probably rain on the "big snow" we just had.  :) Post pics when you can. We like to see other's bikes.  ;)
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Hello from another Michigander. Northern Detroit Suburbs here (Utica). '72 350F in final stages of "preservation" (as opposed to "restoration"). Was all there and in durn decent shape for a 40 year old bike when I got 'er this fall bolted onto a Velorex 562 sidecar.

Just waiting on my custom 2-to-1 collectors to be done so I can hang the exhaust, set dynamic timing, and do the vacuum sync. Otherwise totally gone-through stem to stern and ready!

Hey,  ADW......I think I remember that rig.....back many years ago, probably to you ;)
I was a member of a sidecar club in the Eastern side of the state.....lot of people from around Detroit in it and I seem to remember a girl that a Honda 350 four with a sidecar. This would have been in the mid 80's...the time the photo in my Avatar was taken.
No guarantees.....wouldn't it be great IF I could find photos with her in them ????
Keep your fingers crossed.
also..........I like your idea of Preservation, just clean it up really well, original patina, right?
The photo below is my current Sidecar Rig; I have to say its a "little" bit quicker than my 750. ::)

Yep, exactly. No repainting, no polishing engine covers, etc. Just the natural state of the bike, but cleaned, tuned, and with all systems to spec. Used some Meguiar's Cleaner Wax on the tank, fork headlight tubes, sidecovers, and they cleaned up really nice! I did paint the battery box because there was some rust on it from acid getting on it. Had to stop the rust so sandblasted and painted that. Everything else has just been cleaned up and adjusted to spec, leaking seals replaced, carbs rebuilt, steering stem disassembled and regreased, same w/swingarm, forks disassembled and rebuilt, etc. All nuts and bolts cleaned and wire-wheeled. Cosmetically it's just a cleaned up version of what it is, a 40-year-old bike with a few dents, scratches, and etc. I like 'em stock, and I don't like them too "perfect", so this one is ideal.

Of course some stuff needed out-and-out replacement. Like the rear shocks, totally sacked out and screwed up...got some new lookalike repros. And the exhaust...came with a rotted out Jardine 4 into 2 that was loud as hell. Found 4 header pipes for a 350F on eBay and am having a buddy make some custom collectors for me to put them into a 2 into 1 to a Dunstall-type muffler on each side. Of course new tires and tubes. Etc. But you get the idea, replace the stuff that you've got no choice, but otherwise don't over-buff stuff and repaint things that have some scratches in 'em, let them be! Those are what give the bike character!

My opinion only, your mileage may vary, etc. etc. etc.

Re: the bike and car, it spent the last 20 years or so near St. Charles MI, which is a touch west of the thumb. That's where the PO lived/where I bought it.

I am not always a fan of stock...but it's really cool to hear that others have this outlook on painting/polishing...

Yeah, it was nice for about 2 hours yesterday. I think February is the gloomiest month by far, and we get 29 days of it this year!

I am gonna try real hard to get back to Gilmore for that June ride.

Yeah, Ryan.......I tell the Kids I work with that my 'cycles tires are older than them !
Which reminds me, it's time to replace the front Avon Sidecar Tyre on the Yamaha Rig....I forget when I bought it, but it might have been on my other '78  750F rig, like in my Avatar photo.

But hey, what do you mean by Old Technology,  Disc Brakes, Single Over Head Cam. Wow!
.............new technology , compared to a H-D Sportster of the same year ;D  joking.

FINALLY got my 2-into-1 collectors and got the exhaust hung on the bike. I've been hoping with all this nice weather that I could get the exhaust done in time to get in a ride to be sure there were no big gremlins lurking I needed to deal with before the winter's out. (Test ride yesterday went really well! Went about 10 miles, everything works well, no big leaks, no problems). Cool! Now all I have to do is set timing with the light and sync the carbs and she's ready.
