Put some clamps on the rubbers and put on the old k&n air filter. Runs pretty good but still has no top end. Maxed out at 6000 rpms in 5th gear on the freeway.

Float bowl over flow was leaking so i pulled it and cleaned the needle. The petcock was also not turning off all the way so it would overflow the stuck float even when i had it off. So i pulled the petcock to replace it and found that it didnt even have the tubes that make it "on" or "reserve". I didnt have the filter screen either.

Next i double checked the timing with a new gun. It is dead on. But i did find one plug cap was shorting out through a crack in it. I replaced it but it still wont go over 6k in 5th gear. I t sort of bogs when i go from 3/4 to full throttle. I guess this air filter is flowing to much air and i either need to change back to a stock filter or re-jet.

oK, So i rode the bike a 100+ miles and then i changed the oil and the shifter seal today. Warm the bike up and ride it around the block and now it shifts into neutral real nice! Time will tell if the new shifter seal is holding. Next on the list is getting the stock filter back in there to see if that brings the power back to the top end. Fingers crossed.

ffJMoore: I was just curious as to whether or not you were able to repair your master cylinder bleed valve?

You mean the caliper bleeder? No  but i just got off the phone with auto zone. I ordered a repair kit. My fork leg had some brake fluid on it today so the caliper needs a rebuild. I hope the repair kit works. Otherwise i guess ill just keep looking for a new caliper. I would prefer a new caliper.

ffJMoore: Yes, I meant caliper not master cylinder. That picture you posted is of the same kit that I used on my caliper and it worked out great. Good luck.

If that kit doesn't work, you can buy repros from DSS.

Yeah....when i said new I didnt mean NEW $$$$ i just meant new to me at a cheap price. My goal with this bike is just to make it a reliable runner for road trips. Thanks for the link though.

replaced the bleeder. So far so good. Anybody that needs it done, Ill do it for $10 plus return shipping. I also did a write up in the TECH section if you want to do it yourself.

Bike was bogging on the top end. My thoughts are that it is lean, and Im waiting on a stock filter so in the meantime this was my remedy. Seat dyno tells me that its more responsive now.

Anybody have an idea why this bike tops out at 70mph? Carbs were cleaned but i can't remember if i pulled the emulsion tubes or not. Timing is dead on the mark. I would like to get the bike squared away so i can ride to the coast and say hi for the cross country tour.

Recheck the high speed circuit in the carbs?  Did you verify that the ignition advance was free and would go to full advance?

Yes the advancer is free. The mains are clean and clear. I should do a plug chop to see if all cylinders are running the same fuel mixture at WOT. I can handle a top speed of 70 for now i guess, I just want to make sure that its not lean and going to blow the motor if i ride for a few hours. I read somewhere that a low battery could be the cause. Not sure how but I could use a new battery. This one will crank the bike for like 3 seconds and then is done.

Ill put a volt meter on it today but i pretty sure its good. The battery was in the bike and dead when i bought it. I charged it and the bike ran. I have left the key on twice, jumpstarted the bike and let the motor charge the battery. So Im thinking the charging is ok but the battery is pretty toast.

Took the bike for a ride yesterday up into the hills. Top speed was still 70 with the stock airbox and filter. Not a lot of power when i go up a hill. What really told me something was wrong was when i was at the highest point of the ride (about 4000 feet) I was riding down a long steep hill and the top speed was...........70! DOWN HILLLLL!!
When i got towards the bottom ( about 1800 feet) I tried again and it got up to 80mph. So Im thinking that my timing is retarded. So when i get home i guess ill give that a shot an see how that effects things.

It was a little cooler then i had anticipated.

The other issue i having is a front suspension issue. The forks make a clunk/click sort of noise when I hit bumps. It feels like the steering stem is loose but its not. Its that kind of noise though where you can feel it more then hear it. It seems like it happens most when the forks extend all the way. Changed the fork oil and it still does it. I will continue to lok for the source but any pointers would be helpful.

Could not get the timing in the right spot because the plate would not rotate far enough. So i ordered new points. In the mean time I swapped on a full plate from my 550 cafe that im building. Timing gun broke. Bought a new one and got the timing as close as i could get. If anything its a tad advanced. Then i did a carb sync but no adjustment was necessary. So i went for a ride. Now it had a weird sputter at 7-8k and a few other little hic ups i had not felt before. Still not top end and is just a slug.  Just to confirm that my bike is slow i rode my friend kevins and it pulls hard. He has a 4-1 but it cant make that much difference. So my new theory is that #1 main jet is kinda clogged so it runs and idles ok but just bogs out at the high end giving me really only 3 cylinders at full power. #1 plug always looks lean so i dropped the bowl and cleaned things up. I will go for a ride tomorrow and report back my findings.
Stay tuned.

My forks were making a clunk type noise and it ended up only being my speedo cable hitting the forks when they compressed. Might be worth a look.

Took it for a ride once it stopped raining today. No change in performance.  :'( I will continue to search. Next up I think is taking the carbs back off so i can double check the emulsion tubes. Does that sound like a possible culprit for the problem? The bike starts and idles fine. It even does fine around town. Its just when i want to go fast the thing is a slug. No acceleration and no top speed.

took the carbs off. Punched out the emulsion tubes.

That might be why it runs bad.
Also i found that the jets are 115 main and 40 pilot. Do I go back to a stock 100? Better check the needle setting also.

Cleaned all the emulsion tubes, Replaced the jets with 100's but left in the 40's. Put them back on. What a pain the boots are! Fired it up and synced the carbs. At this point is was running better but still felt wrong. Header #4 was not getting hot. After ruling out the plugs and coil i figured it must be the fuel. Not sure how it could be lacking fuel, I just cleaned these carbs. So I drop bowl #4 and its bone dry! I had to take the float off and pull the needle down with pliers to get it out. Im not sure how long it was like that. Im pretty sure it had fuel in it when i cleaned the emulsion tubes but Im not 100% sure.

So after that i buttoned it back up and started the bike. Now it revved like id should but was blowing smoke bad. So I rode it for a while and it doesnt seem to smoke much if any now. And...It runs like a top. I have never seen such a night and day change in performance. It went from a total slug to ripping the bars from my hands when i accelerate.
