Split my cases, what the heck is this?
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:30:58 AM »
When I split my cases, this little guy flew out.  I tracked him down but have no idea where he belongs.  I can't find reference to him in the service manual nor do I see him on any diagrams...Ideas?  ???

Very hard to see from your photo but it looks like  a bearing that goes on the end of a trans shaft.  More info needed, what bike?

looking at where your dyno cover mounts upper right, top case half..is the main oil gallery.. there should be a plug in there..

Bike is a 72 CB500.
I didn't pull the transmission, so I don't think it could be a bearing off there.

I'll check near the dyno cover.
754, you're not referring to the dowels are you?  I have both of those in their proper position.

This is a hollow ring.  I can see slight wear marks on the sides.

I couldn't find anything in the starter clutch diagram that matched, and the starter clutch wasn't apart when I split them.  I plan on putting them back together tonight.  I guess we shall see what we shall see...

Did you take out the selector drum? The only place a piece that looks like that is is on the end of the drum locator that screws into the top case with a tab washer

BryanJ is a winner.  I came here to tell you I figured it out, but he had me beat by 3 minutes!  So my new question is this...it appears Honda changed this at some time.  BikeBandit shows one with a spring and ball and one with the piece I have attached simply to the shift guide screw.  I never saw a spring nor a ball, but which version is supposed to have improved shifting?

I never removed the shifter drum, and when I spin it via the external cam plate I cannot see the detent from the screw hole that the shift guide screw goes in.  Will I be able to spin it around without resplitting the cases?

I had a bad feeling I would figure it out upon reassembly.  The good news is I figured it out!  Thanks for the help thus far.

The pring and ball go with the VERY early type change mechanism but are left out on the later type.

There should be something in the list of bulletins elswhere on the board if you read up on the complete modification

For some reason the service bulletin section of the site pulls up dead ends instead of pdfs?

Any idea on whether or not I can get the detent to swing around if I remove the cam plate with the cases back together?

try this link

And you fit it by sticking it to the screw in piece with grease
