New electronic Dyna ignition doesn't fit..
« on: February 06, 2012, 07:15:55 PM »
So I got my self a Dyna 3 ignition, part number D31-1 for my '77 CB400F. The packaging states it is for the 350-400 four. It all checks out as the right set for the bike I have. I went to install today and everything is going well until I try to slide the new Dyna rotor over the spark advance shaft. The I.D. of the new rotor is to small for the spark advance shaft. Yes, I took off the old points cam first. Has anyone had this issue? Is anyone here experienced enough to know whether there are spark advance mechanisms with different shaft O.D.s that would fit this bike? Does Dyna have a history of adding the wrong parts to it's kits? The bike was running great with points, timed in and ticking over like a champ. I read that the factory spark advance was made by Denso, the one on my bike is marked from TEC. Any help would be appreciated as I would love to run this ignition.

Do you mean the little anodized plug type thing doesn't fit over the shaft? I had that problem because of differences in some CB400F's. I thought it was only '75's though.  Maybe take a photo of what isn't fitting where so we can see if something is out of the ordinary.

Rick.

Funny Rick, after posting I did yet another search and found myself on page 13 of your build reading that you had to get a 15mm rotor from Dyna to fit your spark advance  shaft. I think I am having the same problem. It seems there are two sizes of shafts floating around out there. Great build by the way, nice work. Where you able to get a 15mm from Dyna with no trouble?

I too had the same problem with my Dyna.  I called them and they sent me the rotor that fits the 750 I think, and it went together fine.

Haha, the CB400F club!

Glad you found my post, I was suspecting you had the same problem as me but the '77 year model made me question if I was understanding you correctly. Yep, called Dyna and they were great. Sent me out the larger part. At the time I was in Australia and had to wait 20 days for it arrive. If you're in the US, I would think you'd get it in a couple of days.

Good luck,
Rick.

Called Dyna and they are sending me the correct part, for free, up here to Canada. It'll probably take forever though, just enough time for the snow to melt!
