Alternator coil question.

What is the smaller core in the center of the rotor for? Does it provide the magnetism for the rotor? I ask because my S1000RR and my Friend's CBR1000RR only have the larger coil and rotor, no inner coil.
Thanks,
Gonzo

its an electro magnet, its voltage is regulated as the voltage climbs so its strength is weakend, those late model bikes use a permanant magnet,as their voltage climbs the excess voltage is more or less dumped into an earth.
