any issues to removing fork boots?
« on: February 13, 2012, 06:10:41 AM »
On a cb750 - if one wanted to remove the black rubber accordioned fork boots, what needs to be done to ensure they don't get overly filled up with dirt/dust?

thanks guys

Ian, you need to ask yourself, why were they put on in the first place.

Once you get them off you will probably find some bad looking metal tubes which are covered nicely by the gators. But if you are set to take them off you can get some rubber funnel looking covers that are on the later Honda's that would work to keep the dirt out of the fork seal area. Take a close look at my 81 CM400C and note the fork seal covers. Click the pic to enlarge it.

I agree, I prefer the gators as they do a great job protecting the swept area of the tube from dirt and dinks.  Even Honda though sometimes went for the looks over function.  These are probably what you are looking for.

Or if your intent is to simply get rid of the stock ears, but you like the look of the accordion fork boots, you could get these... http://www.jokermachine.com/itemcafe2004.asp?ItemID=694&CategoryID=85&Placeholder=.  This would allow you to use aftermarket ears and keep your accordions.

these are all true and good points - but as my current tubes are fairly rusted...i've decided to go with cycle-x's lowering kit...may as well show off the new and shiny tubes....right?

I did.  CycleX -2's with their dust caps.  And I slid the tubes up another 1 1/4"  You can get an idea of what you might get with the stance.  I did not like the 18" rim in the back with the shorty shocks so I laced a 16'rim.  To me it looked horrible and too far up in the fender.

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I put early 750 forks on my late 550 and wanted to use caps instead of gators.  My 550 caps wouldn't fit, but I did find a solution.  Here's what I did (including part numbers).

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
