Spacers in forks?
« on: February 11, 2012, 05:14:32 PM »
I was  changing oil in forks today and there was a spacer between the spring and the fill plug. Is it normal?  I had one hell of a time to get the plug back.  Are there any tricks to the job?  The manual is straight forward but it was a main pita, let me tell you.

It's 'normal' but not stock.
Lot of people find stock springs too soft so increase pre-load with a spacer.
The easiest way I've found to re-fit fork caps, 'speed brace' as you can push down and turn at the same time, plus, doing it by hand, you can feel when threads engage (or, if they are not going in 'straight')

I ended up lifting the bike off the ground - I have only kick stand - and pushing down with extended socket wrench. Still a strugle it was.

Reinstalling the fork caps is a piece of cake with this set up: a sliding t-wrench, ratcheting adapter and proper socket...Larry

Yep,  the center stand with all the weight off the front is a necessity, or something under the bike to get the weight off.  Guess an added spacer could make the task a bit more difficult...Larry
