Looked in the FAQ but im not sure of what they are called or what they do. I'm assuming they were for assembly or that they act as a heat sink to keep the jug cool. Can they be removed (i think i did on my 550)? Should they be replaced? Are they still available if so? And finally what exactly are they for? Thanx Im pretty sure half of them are missing anyway.

They also are noise deadeners (I think). Keep the fins from buzzing and setting up harmonics. No use to me but i wouldn't spend the energy to remove them either.

Any idea on how they're secured in there?

Each one is a biscuit of rubber with a tit of rubber sticking up on top and bottom. The tits fit into tiny holes in the fins. If you want them out, you grab or pry them to drag the tits out of their holes and force them back in the reverse way.

OCICBW, pretty sure that's right.

Yeah, that's correct.
I would add that with time and exposure to heat the rubber "biscuits" are probably rock-hard and may well be impossible to reinstall once removed.
