Advice for good spray painting(?)
« on: February 22, 2012, 07:42:05 AM »
Ok so I'm spraying the fork legs, chrome fenders and headlamp cover (?) I sanded everything down well with some fine sand paper and cleaned after with some mineral spirits. I primed them over nicely, and now  at spraying them part of the project.  I want these done nicely and hopefully not looking like crap..I also hope they don't chip or something. So my question is how many coats are enough??? Can I actually overcoat it? Also I got some semi- gloss ..rustoluem.. is this what I need for after the painting right? Wouldn't I need a " gloss coat?" Or what's the semi-gloss all about? And how many coats do I do with the clearcoat? Thanks for any inf ormation

Before you go too far you need to test the adhesion of the primer to the chrome.  Paint does not stick very well to Chrome.  Give the primer plenty of time to set up then see if it will scratch off easily.  If it does you sure don't want to color coat it yet.  If it doesn't then you got enough tooth in the chrome.  Sandblasting is generally the best for prepping chrome surfaces before painting.

Yea I noticed just a bit of Chrome peek chip once in while..I just repainted again. Ok...so can I just reprime it or do I need to take that spray off again?

If you're sure you don't ever want those parts to be chrome anymore...,do what lone*X said and sand blast them.

I'm taking them in to get powdered..it'll be 30$ for the legs. Not bad. My question is now ...is..... They do fork tubes and I would like the forks to be a gold to match my gold chain ...is this ok to do on fork tubes??? Will there be any effect on the fork seals in any way if I did that???

What actual parts of you're forks will you be having Powder Coated ? the upper tubes ?...or the outer aluminum lowers/sliders ?

I wouldn't recommend that you have the fork "tubes" themselves powdercoated or painted...they are a certain size outer diameter and they fit down into the lowers at the bottom with a very precise fit.If you were to spray a coating on the outside of them it will increase the outer diameter enough so that then the fork tubes will not fit back inside the lowers any more...even if you could force them to fit down in there again..it would be so tight that the forks wouldn't go up or down anymore and result in a Very harsh ride.I hope that you only have the lowers done..but tell the powdercoater to make sure he seals up the hole very good where the forks slide in...if it even can be done.

Yeah...,and as long as your Powder coater makes sure to seal up the hole real well in the lowers where the fork tube goes in, it should come out nice  ;)..you'll have to remove the tubes from the lowers...basically disassemble both forks as you would when you do a fork seal job.  :)
