What K model is this CB750?
« on: January 12, 2012, 03:25:24 PM »
Hi all,

I'm new to CB750's (have only had a CB400F) and am looking for a project bike. I was wondering if someone could tell me what K model this is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330670100531

I thought the larger rear wheel and chunky passenger seat was from the later K6 or K7 bikes. The owner says he lost the title and it isn't his bike, so I question whether it is a 1974 (K4) model as stated.

Thanks for the help,
Rick.

See if you can get the serial numbers off the seller.

The seat is definitely an aftermarker item.  That rear wheel looks like a 16" instead of the stock 18" - popular switch back in the day.

Lost title = NO TITLE.   Carefull with that one - $300 is pushing it.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

+1, the VIN and production date is on the VIN tag. The seller could even take a photo, and send it to you.

Ouch! what would be to toll for shipping a bike from California to Melbourne?  Would it be worth it for one in that shape?  Can you even export/import  a bike without a title?  And the owner says he is selling a bike that is not his?  I wouldn't touch that with a 10 ft. pole.

Looks one to avoid.

Just curious ...that rim on the back... is it the photo or is it about 13"?!

The back wheel is an aftermarket "Harley" style 16 incher.  They were popular in the 70's.

Haha, thanks lone*X, I'm in Los Angeles now, should update my profile. No way I'd ship something like that home!

I'm looking for a beater CB750 to start my CR750 project, so the cheaper the better really as I'll be pulling all apart anyway. Finding a beater bike within road trip distance of Los Angeles is proving difficult. I don't want any title problems though, that's for sure. I'd only pull the trigger on this if a) I could verify what K model it was (I want a K2-K5 preferably) and b) the seller found the 'lost' title.

Thanks for the heads up,
Rick.

the ID tags are on the steering neck of the motorcycle tag on the right and stamped number on the left.

Also a  little trick, Look closely on the tail light lens and the year was stamped into the lens.

Where is the ignition key located?
Does the right handlebar switch have a kill switch?

It sure looks like a K4.
Gas tank petcock right side.
Front fender has 2 braces.

cougar He said he found the title. RickB That seat was a hot item back in those days. My bike came with one from PO. I bought a stock one from a member That I use on less than 200 miles. That double bucket I don't like the looks of but I do use and like it on 300 plus trips. I think $300 would be just about tops for me on that one. Pictures don't tell it all need to see it live might be worth more.

Thanks for the help guys.

I've been corresponding with the seller trying to determine if he has the title. According to the seller, he is selling this bike for a friend that has since died. Now I'm from Australia and find the whole US DMV system to be somewhat daunting. Perhaps someone with some knowledge of the Califnornia DMV process can help shed some light on this for me.

Here's my correspondence:

Me: G'day mate. Any luck in finding that title? If not, can you get a duplicate issued? Or is it safe to say it's gone forever? Thanks.

Seller: title get lost all the time its not a problem getting another oneif I apply the new title will be in my name if you apply it will be in your name all you need it a propper bill of sale from dmv

Me: According to the CA DMV's website on "what to do when buying a vehicle from a private party" (http://dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm), a buyer needs:

"A properly endorsed title, also known as a pink slip, with the previous owner's signature on line one. If the vehicle is or was financed, line two of the title will also require a releasing signature. If the title is lost, an Application for Duplicate Title (REG 227) must be completed and signed. There is an additional fee for a duplicate title, and signatures of the legal owner and lienholder must be notarized. If the vehicle was not purchased from the owner whose name appears on the title, you will need a bill of sale from each in-between buyer".

If you download the PDF in that section (Reg 227), you'll see the requirements needed to request a duplicate title. Specifically, you need to have the registered owner of record's details, signatures of the owner on the missing title statement and the registered owner and/or legal owners release of ownership. All of this is to be filled out by the seller. As you're selling it for a friend for has passed away, I'm not sure how easy this will be to do. Forge a signed bill of sale from your friend to you perhaps? Providing you have the originally registered address still. If not, the DMV will see this discrepancy and likely refuse to issue a duplicate title.

So a bill of sale may be sufficient, but only if you are able to verify the correct details of the originally registered owner. However, the bike's VIN may not be in the DMV system and then it will have to be registered, which may be easier but I have never come across this before.

So perhaps someone has some experience with something like this at the DMV and can tell me if it's just a matter of getting the paperwork sorted or if this bike is destined for the parts pile.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick.

It takes a few trips to the DMV, and CHP, but un-titled bikes can be re-titled in California fairly easily.  No title does not equal parts bike here.

Greggo, I'm glad to hear this. I called the Calif. DMV yesterday, and the gentleman said a bike can be retitled only if DMV has record of its previous title in California. My bike's PO couldn't find his out-of-state title; the DMV dude said I need to first get it retitled in the state where it was last titled.

Has anyone done this California retitling recently who can walk me through the procedure? Bike's a '72 CB750K2, and I have bill of sale.

Yeah i have last fall. The DMV wants to INSPECT a working bike meaning VIN, blinkers, brake lights and so on plus a form that says the Highway patrol has inspected it and your BOS of course. So you get it inspected by the CHP when it's ready, fill out all the forms from the DMV site and then go to the DMV with a complete running bike - not a roller, and all paperwork from CHP . The CHP told me they have a better database than the DMV so his was the final word on whether the bike was in the system during the past 40 years or not - which it was not. That's all I needed to do.

Two weeks ago a buddy got a title for a 750 roller that actually was in the system although all paperwork was lost. So he came up with a bill of sale by the original seller (quite a trick I assume) and he was good to go. He now has a title.

Seriously, the DMV and CHP I always found very helpful in trying to get you riding rather than wanting to confiscate your bike because the paperwork is flawed.

I would bet other states aren't as helpful.

There are also lots of registration helper organizations in CA that will do this for you for a couple hundred bucks. They will do everything site unseen and send you plates and title.

Yeah i have last fall.
Thanks, mycb.
I like to do things myself just for the challenge, so this is inspiration!
I'm getting to the point in my resto that I want to iron out the title before I pour too much more money into this bike, which is seriously growing on me.
By "working," do you mean actually running or just that all the electrical stuff has to work? Right now, my k2 is carbless, pipeless, and not running, but I'd warrant the blinkers and horns and lights will all work. Can I cart it to the Oakland DMV in my van and show them what they want? Or do i have to actually start up the motor?

Well I didn't start up the motor even though I was under the impression It needed to start. All they did at the CHP was check the VIN , lights, mirrors, signals, tires. Didn't have to start it or even turn it on to show stuff works but who knows what your CHP may want - might as well be prepared. So I think you should be able to drag it down to your CHP for the inspection as is. Call and ask them what they will check. They are nice.  You will need an appointment anyway for the inspection as they don't do them every day. Then you take all the paperwork from that inspection to the DMV for the title and registration and plate.

Possibilities are: (1) the VIN is not in the system and you're good to go, (2) VIN is in the system and you will have to come up with a transfer or BOS from the last known registered owner - more complicated, and (3) VIN is in the system as stolen in which case it's best to know now but I don't know what the outcome will be.

Before I bought my frame, I called the CHP and asked them to run the VIN first which they were happy to.

The California DMV does not keep records after 10 years.
