dropped my dentless gas tank! doh!
« on: May 28, 2006, 10:09:14 PM »
Today I was fiiddling with the carbs.  I got tired of the routine of removing the fuel tank and its hoses.  So ive been just lifting the tank up, and with the seat up, kind of leaning the tank on one half of the frame or the other, wedging it on whatever.  So its leaning over to the left, the engine is idling in neutral, and then all the sudden the tank falls off the frame, and of all places hits the SHIFTER!! clunking it into first gear !  man ive got the worst luck.  luckily the bike didnt decide to do a cruise on its own, it just immediately killed the engine, but my perfectly undented gas tank now has chipped paint and a small dent thanks to the shift lever.  Now I know...

I dont know how this dent could be pulled out,, its near the bottom and the other side give no access to the dent, it would have to be pushed out from the inside.

dont let this happen to you!

You must be feeling p***** with yourself. I have heard of people blocking off the inlet and outlet and using compressed air to pop dents out.

I race nitro RC cars and we often fill our dented exhaust pipes with water. We fill it up with water, plug the holes and stick it in the freezer over night. The water freezes and expands and pushes most of the dents out. Let it melt and presto. I think it should work for a gas tank.... hmmm ?? Who's game?

I heard that, too. Tried it once. Rubber plugs in the holes, 3psi...nothing...hey, maybe heat the dent with a torch to make it malleable...BIG MISTAKE!!! Tank ballooned out like a goose taking off!!! Ruined a $100+ gas tank...   :'(

I would interested in knowing too. Correcting dents other than body filler. I was draining the tank on my RD when it fell and dented. Needless to say I was totally bummed.
