Frustrated and concidering selling my A
« on: May 08, 2012, 09:39:40 AM »
If I asked 1,000 dollars for a 77 750 A with 19,000. Clear title,  is that a out of line. It runs and drives great is all original but missing the grab bar. Tires good, fresh complete tune up, fresh oil/filter change and oil pan removed and cleaned out ( nothing found inside ) . Carbs cleaned and work well. Syncronized with in 1/2 inch.  ( I will pull the carbs and reset the float levels to 12.5 before selling )  It is the blue color in decient shape with small dings and scratches. Chrome not terrible but not great. seat no tears but the piping is worn and ragged. one year old battery well maintained. Aluminum is oxidized but not terribly. fork seals need replacment but I have new ones from Honda. Rebuilt Master cylinder and caliper with Honda parts.  Everything works just as it should. Probably worth much more in pieces but I can't bring myself to part out a good running and driving "A" Seems like a great daily driver but no show piece.  I hoped to turbo this as a unique toy but not now. Just not happy with My oldest sons decisions and would prefer to sell the bike before someone gets hurt. He is a very good kid but needs to get some of his priorities in a different order. I see no reason to reward dumb decisions. Might sell them all.
Anyone with opinions is welcome to chime in.
Thanks

A grand for a CB750A in decent running shape is a good deal, IMO.

You should be able to get more - again IMO - but "your results may vary".

BTW, my son is getting discharged from the Air Force soon - essentially his choice, but Honorable only by the skin of his teeth.  Similarly, he needs his head screwed on a little better.  Hope so . . . time will tell.

Anyway, hate to lose a CB750A owner - but if you do sell, tell them about us . . . .

Thanks for the thoughts. I hoped it was worth a little more than$1,000. It is not very pretty but drives and runs so nice. A good daily driver with potential with a litttle more TLC.  I have a 32 year old son that did the Air Force right out of High school and it was the best thing he ever did. Turned out pretty good in my opinion. The 19 year old is still a very good kid but his girlfriend might be part of the problem and he cant see it yet. Very spoiled and expensive tastes. Maybe we can get thru this soon and get back to normal and I can keep my "A" .

OK I'm done complaning.

Depending on what it looks like in person, you might be able to get more.

It took 20 years in the USAF to only get me a little in line.....

Hope things work out for you and yours.

The girlfriend has moved on and my Son's ability for good decision making seems to be working better. Funny how the mind can be corrupted. Hope the good behavior continues.

Seems the automatics just do not bring the money the 5 speeds do. Guess people like to shift gears. Without seeing pics of it $1,000 seems fair. But you can always ask more as everyone wants to haggle. Leave yourself room to haggle.

I rode my 1966 CA77 Dream and Went to a local car show yesterday and they usually have a small showing of vintage bikes and saw a spectacular 750 K0  and it had 913 miles on it. I did not even ask the price. I love the sound of the early K models. The mufflers were very different sounding than the later K's even as far back as K3 and K4's.  Funny how much interest there is in the vintage bikes. I will ride the "A" next week for Kicks.

The Air Force should be helping your son.

I was a mechanic at a Honda dealership when the automatics came and went.
Very few were sold.

It was Honda's plan to get more people to ride motorcycles, but it was too large of a bike for women and men wanted to shift.

Now there are many young men that cannot shift a standard transmission car anymore!! The automatics have been reintroduced in the new Hondas.

I was at a hardware store a couple months back and the owner wanted a load delivered. There were 4 young men standing around and not one offered to drive the load. It turns out that none of the FOUR 20 year old young men know how to drive a standard shift vehicle!!! THAT is a true story people.

I have some very fond memories from when I was younger, I got my first car when I was 11, it was a datsun 1200 ute, I thought it was the fastest thing on wheels,  my first driving lesson involved my old man leaning in the window and saying "First gear is there, the brake is there, the clutch is there and the accelerator is there, now don't run into that big bush over there, make sure you go round it."  Well needless to say, the bush got flattened, my mother was pi$$ed and I learnt to drive a manual in a matter of weeks.  That was only 15 years ago (holy sh!t, I'm starting to sound old) but it surprises me the difference from then to now, it used to be common place to drive a manual, but now the amount of people who now can't drive a manual surprises me.

Sort of like riding a bike. Once you learn to run a standard vehicle it seems to just come naturally when you do it again after many years. Back to the 750A...I bought my first new CB750 in 1977. I had a choice of the 5 speed or the automatic. I rode them both and Lucky has it right...men like to shift. So I bought the CB750K7. The 750A I tested never left the showroom. I think Honda wanted to try to get more women interested in riding and was hoping the 750A would make that happen. Here is a pic of the bike I bought that day.

Lucky

Were you a mechanic in calif. back then ? I was a Mechanic for Honda from 1973-1978 here in Chicago. We got to see the Automatics and goldwings when they were new back then.
I have been able to teach all three of my kids and my wife to drive Stick. Now we only have cars with manual trans. None of there friends know how to do it and that is sad.

Prices may be different in Illinois vs. west-coast Seattle.  $1000 for a running bike with the maintenance/tuning sounds like a good deal.

you should see how ridiculous prices in California are. I see average condition CB350 and 450 Twins with a bolt on "Cafe" seat and low bars from ebay. The sellers call them customs and try to sell them for 3500 to 5000!!!!!!
Not putting miles on your bike is like not having sex with your Girl Friend so she'll be more desirable to her next Boy Friend.

In TX that would be cheap. I'm back in CT a lot for work and that would ballpark if not slightly low

I figured it will go to a good home from this site and not get parted out to E-Bay. It is a pretty good deal to someone and I dont loose much money and the time spent with my kids getting it running and cleaned up covers the time so its a break even thing. I would take more if someone offere more in some bidding war thing but Its time to move on and I will use the $$ to work on my old 84 goldwing.
