Thoughts about those #630 chains

I realized today that those #630 massive chains that were on some CB750s
caused a lot of damage because they weighed so much and when they broke
all that mass and weight and force inflicted the damage on the aluminum cases.

The newer #530 chain does not weigh nearly as much, and should cause a lot less damage IF it did break.

If put together correctly and maintained it will not break any more than any other chain.
Some people just don't take care of there stuff. It is not the chains fault. I have never heard of a 630 breaking. Do you have a post of one doing this damage you speak of?

If you break a 630 then you are seriously abusing your bike. And the weight of the chain is not what kills the cases, it's the fact that it wads up in front of the CS sprocket.

Agreed Ken, any chain will eventually fail if ignored long enough. That said a modern 520 is probably stronger than any original chain available in the day.

The newer chain was the 630, used on the 77/78 bikes. The 530 size was the one that tended to break and damage the case... ;)

It would take a lot of abuse to break a new 630 chain. I am sticking with the 630 when I replace mine. It is easier since the bike is set up for 630. For me it is laziness.
