exhaust gasket confusion

So I've noticed I have two exhaust leaks on my '77 750 at the heads (into the headers). I bought new copper exhaust gaskets when I re-installed my exhaust, but must have incorrectly tightened my headers. I figure it's best just to order new gaskets (unfortunatly you can't un-crush these suckers) and focus on being a bit more diligent about installation.

My question is, what gaskets should I go with?

I have allways used the top copper ones. I have not heard any thing bad about the other ones. But no reason to change unless the price is a lot better.
What do you think you did wrong with the last ones?
Some people don't get the old ones out and it will leak.  You can scratch the head with a pick to see if there is copper still there.

To be honest, it was about a year between taking the pipes off and putting them back on. I knew of the copper gaskets prior to removal, so I'd like to think I would have taken the old out, but can't be for certain.

The copper gaskets are a few bucks cheaper. I guess I'll go with them unless anyone has any objections. I'll be sure to make sure I clean up the heads before the new gaskets get put on. Thanks for the advice, Ken.

Well, just make sure you check good. When I took of the PO's exhaust, he had a set of gaskets over the oooold gaskets. Looked like casting marks or welding inside the ports. It should be a smooth port with a distinct corner.

the silver colored corrugated gaskets are thicker, so getting the headers and collars in place and then catching threads on the studs is a little more trouble - that was my experience anyway. the headers i was installing were a difficult fit.

octagon Good to hear thicker may be better if there are sealing issues.
Kevin If you have a dremmel tool a cupped wire brush works perfect for cleaning up the the seal area most of the time soot will cover up the old gasket the brush will show if there is copper in there and if so a good strong pick will dig it out. Then wire brush again to get a clean surface for the new gasket. I found two old gaskets in mine when I first got it. The third one would not fit so keep looking. Damn PO
