Sometimes lucky
« on: February 08, 2012, 05:33:56 PM »
I was not really looking for another bike, but it is an addiction.  A friend told me about one of his retired buddies who wanted to clean out his garage.  A motorcycle was part of the clutter.  I had to go look and it was a 1974 cb750, 9000 miles, all original
(even the tires), not started since 1986.  It still had the owner's manual and tool kit under the seat.  The paint is nearly perfect, but there is a small rust hole on one of the mufflers.  Well, there it is.  He said he wanted $1000.00 but as much as said make me an offer.  I guess I'll be at his house with a trailer tomorrow.  What do you guys think?

If it's really that nice give him the grand and try not to grin too much until after it's on the trailer...

If I go get the bike there will be pictures.  I don't want anyone to recognize anything in the background and get there before me.

Like Tews says,so far its a good story but without a picture and not knowing if the engine turns over or any other major details hard to say if its worth a thousand or whatever you offer.I have not had to go more than a grand on any of my bikes that I never heard run so be careful. Show us a picture when you get it back to your crib since you don't have one now.Sure I and the rest will be jealous when we see it.Looking forward for the pics.  PS-Is there something in that guys garage junk/clutter we will be able to recognize and steal it away from you   ::)

I borrowed a friends trailer and picked up the bike.  It looks really good.  I even like the Wixom Broyhers fairing.  So far all I have done is remove the tappet adjustment covers and spark plugs and injected oil.  It has not been started in 25 years.  Carb kits are on the way.

Looks like a pretty complete survivor, congrats. Engine turning over OK ?   That's the kind of clutter I like to find.

Very nice mate, change the oil and filter and replace your tires with new rubber before you ride it anywhere, I've got a K1 here with only 5000 miles from new with tires just like yours, and the rear has some serious cracking in the sidewalls. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The motor turns over easily with the kick starter.  I haven't used the electric starter yet.  I researched Wixsom fairings and found them mostly on BMWs.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

The good thing about those fairings is if you did want to remove them (hint ,hint) is that they used the stock headlight bucket unlike the Vetter style, and there is far wire less splicing etc. going on with the wiring loom than the old pigtails that had to be installed with said Vetter.

So far so good.  Cleaned the carbs with new kits, changed oil and filter, new plugs,  and engine came to life for the first time in 26 years.  After it cooled down I checked the compression with it at 150psi all the way across.  There is still much to do: Adjust the cam chain, check the points and dwell, check lifter adjustments and synchronize the carbs, and then the brakes and tires.  There are a couple of rust holes on the mufflers.  I'm not sure what to do.  I think I read where you can cut off the originals and install Mac mufflers in their place?  Does that sound correct?  I want it to run quiet.  The older I get the more I appreciate quiet.  Any ideas would be helpful.

Got that fairing off yet???  ;D  Regarding the muffler, if only one has a hole just replace it with the OEM which would be the HM341 which are quiet and will compliment the bike for sure and keep it looking original...once the fairing is off. But seriously, Honda is making the original exhausts again for the restoration buffs. Those 4 into 4 OEM's just look so great on these bikes. But they cost about $300 each, so you will have to check your wallet and your wife before you buy them. Or do what I did...I joined the Muffler of the Month Club which makes it not such a shock to the bank account.  8)  I really like that freedom green. That is a great find there. Have fun with it.
