Cycle X frame splice kits any thoughts or a walkthrough?

I am interested in the frame splice kit thet cyclex offers. Has anyone used these or have a reason not to? Anyone know of a walkthrough or have a install with pics? thanx

There is a member on this forum making up sets of those for sale.  I believe they will be less than $100.  Check out the bikes & parts for sale section.

These are only needed on a 750. Do you have a 550?

If you're talking about the "Gordon Frame Kit" it is much beefier and has sold for north of $250 I think. Likely the new batch will be higher.

Yeah, thanks a direct copy of Gordon's kit but without the braces that connect the bottom tubes to the top tube. Too bad Gordon didn't have a patent to prevent this. He was doing something for all of us and now someone will be profiting off Gordon's work and his idea.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I have a kit from APE I've spoken of and shown pictures, purchased in 1980 or before. Not as nice as the Gordon, but Big Jay said he sold thousands of them. Maybe tens of thousands.

As to the CycleX kit I think there is a shortcut in the design which compromises use of the under tank ignition switch or something. i remember reading...

Yeah, I just compared pictures. The Gordon Kit front lugs are much different than CycleX with an adjuster nut and stuff. It may be the Gordon Kit that compromises the under tank switch location.

Someone should get some clarity on that if you care.

I agree with that. I have oneof Gordon's kits for my next project as well.

These are only needed on a 750. Do you have a 550?

The concern is with these if they are not installed far enough foreward you can't take the head off. Gordons kit has an additional threaded portion that unscrews. I would ask for verification that the head can be removed, if they have auctually tested it I see no reason not to buy it. The splice for the angle bars is easily fabricated. I made my own that were tapped so I didn't have to deal with nuts on the inside. I do have a gordon kit installed, it was way easier to pull the engine, I may put it back in then take the head off just to see.

Yes, that was the issue. Far enough forward. And too far interferes with the ignition mount, which can be relocated, but that throws off the original look. My APE kit doesn't allow the ig under tank mount. I fabbed up my own bracket to allow it.

Also, besides the intended purpose of being able to remove head and cyls while cases are in the bike, as you mention removal of the complete engine is much easier as well if that's what's called for.
