Author Topic: ALWAYS WEAR FULL PROTECTIVE GEAR...GRAPHIC !!! (Read 3714 times)

Hi all
First of all it`s great to be back!!I`ve been playing in a certain middle east sandbox for the last 3 months and made it back safe and sound.My wife has been lurking on here to try and keep me updated on the latest.
Needless to say the second most important ride I took was on my `72 CB500.
It was 97 F that day and I just wanted to go for a quick spin so I put on my mesh jacket, full face helmet and a pair of those cutoff summer riding gloves.
I only made it 2 miles down the road when ***BAM*** the next thing I see is a car right in front of me pulling out of a side road .I didn`t have a chance to anything other than bail off of the bike so my body wouldn`t hit the car.
So there I was sliding down the tarmac at 50 mph trying to stay on my back where most of the armor in the jacket is when halfway through the slide I got flipped on my side and front and my hands came in contact with the road for just a split second.
The jacket did it`s job as did the full face helmet otherwise I would be sitting here with no lips or a nose left.
My hands didn`t fare so well. Yes, the white part you see on my middle finger finger is the bone !!
I have had it open for the last week to drain it and this afternoon I`m going into surgery to have the skin grafts done.
ALWAYS WEAR FULL PROTECTIVE GEAR!!!!!

So the last 3 days I`ve been out in the barn( one handedly) rebuilding the bike including making another cafe style seat so that I can ride when the grafts are done and I can put on a glove

Looks like I`ll have to get me one of those throttle rockers now

Oh holy crap! Nice mitts there buddy! Nothing like leaving your mark huh? Glad you will be ok after some time. I must say the second pic of you hand looks MUCH better!

Glad your OK and your not showing us pictures of your face that look like you hand. I learned the glove lesson years ago, but my hands weren't anything like that. Ouch. Make sure to kiss the helmet and thank it before sending if off.

looks too familiar to me!

high-sided my Yam TX500 back in 88. was not wearing anything but sneakers and jeans, wich was unusual for me. But of course thats the day things go wrong! 7 days in the hospital doing the burn treatment!

2 years ago my dad had a car pull out in front of him too. he still has occasional dizzy spells as something has come loose in his ear. Thank GOD he was wearing the new helmet my siblings and I got him for his birthday!

As a safety issue, the roads would be SO MUCH SAFER, if they'd just ban cars!

The last few days have been hot and I've been lazy. No more after seeing those pictures. Gloves, jacket and helmet for this rider. Glad to hear you're recovering, and nice work on the 750. Looks sharp.

Holy cow!!! It hurts just by seeing it; I rahter don't imagine how it hurts to you!!! And we were wondering where were you lately...

Seeing the bottle half full, at least it could have been worst. Good rebuild job BTW!!!

Sorry to learn of your misfortune Stephan, wasn't aware of it when I sent you that PM the other day.
Looks like you haven't slowed down much, that 500 is lookin good in the pics. First things first though, so take care of those hands and get well soon!

Thanks for the well wishes everybody.

Sorry about the shock therapy. I really debated over whether I should post the pics of my hand, but if it gets someone out there to think twice about riding off in a t-shirt with no gloves or helmet then I think it was worth it.
We all tend to get a little too secure sometimes about things always happening to others but not ourselves

I made it through the the skin graft surgery and have to keep the dressings on until next Friday. The first thing I asked the doc in the recovery room was if I would be able to operate a throttle grip next week and he and my wife just looked at each other and shook their heads. $:-\$

I guess he just doesn`t get it

You're lucky in that regard. My wife would have smacked me and snatched the keys.

Glad to hear it wasn't worse. I flinch when I see guys riding in shorts and flip-flops.

Ouch!!! Glad you made out OK with your surgery. Looks like thats quite painfull. Maybe this will convince the wife to let me get some real riding gear. I've been using some TrueFit gloves made by Tillman........I guess they are actually TIG welding gloves. What sucks is they have Thinsulate in them making them hot as crap here in July and the back where the knuckles are have spandex panels.

I've got a buddy at work that wears shorts and flip flops while riding and another at church that wears shorts.....but he does wears boots. Im saving up for some decent gear.

yeah - i mentioned something about this in the post on full-face helmets...pix i wish i'd never seen...

however, we can't fool ourselves about the risk, not for long anyway...always some peckerwood out there waiting to show us the facts of life...
