worn fork sliders
« on: May 29, 2006, 10:20:45 AM »
Hi all. New to this forum. Have 74 750 forks on a custom scoot and the left slider is worn such that when the brake is applied, the slider has a noticeable slop. (front and back)  Question is, as there are no replaceable bushings in the slider(at least that I've found), is there any fix other than replacement? Replacement would be a no brainer except for the fact that I've had the fender mounting lugs removed , holes welded up and I've polished the whole mess. Thanks, Mike

The offender is currently assembled and even if apart, prolly wouldn't show the wear that's causing the slop. Or did you mean the motorsickle itself?

I just need to see which way the slop is and where.

I don't think there are servicable parts to fix that Prob, may have to replace the lowers/sliders or even the entire fork set if the chrome is gone too? (likely)

The later CB450 (1972-74ish) forks did have replaceble bushes in them and they will fit into the 750 trees although the brakes are smaller.

ElCheap- The slop is fore and aft. I guess what I hoped was to (1) find if this is common (2)find out if there is a service that might be familiar with the machining necessary for a repair.
Chung-  Do you think that a 450 bushing could be fitted to a 750 fork leg with proper machining? Do you know thi part #?   Thanks for all the responses, Mike

P.S. ElCheap--The wear seems to be confined to the top of the sliders.

Ok if the wear is in lower sections you can craft a brass collar. This is not easy but it can be done.

My guess is (even with me being the ultimate cheap skate) the time needed to invest in making a collar to stop your slop will be more trouble than just getting the replacement side and re-perform the mods you did originally to the part you have now.

Sometimes it is better just to start over..

i would think you could by brass bushings that fit other kinds of bikes and have them made to fit you slider.
