Cb750k4 - Bad idea to paint it like a k1?
« on: March 16, 2012, 04:49:51 PM »
I have a barn-find that I have running again...so it is time to start restoring it! The issue is the paint...

I am not wild about the original paint options from 1974. I do want to restore the bike (not make a cafe or something custom), but I really like the look of a k1 in red or blue. Obviously, there is nothing directly keeping me from painting it like this, but I thought I would solicit your opinions.

My goal is to have a classic bike that I enjoy commuting and riding around with. I will sell it after a year or two so I have room for the next project. Would I be shooting myself in the foot to paint a 74 like it is a 71 when it comes time to sell?

First off, welcome!

Unless you have a low mileage all original bike, you won't be shooting yourself any time soon.
I too, have a K4, and am not crazy about the Boss Maroon Metallic paint, but it is in good original cond, so can't bring myself to repaint it. I am thinking about getting spare tank and covers painted my favorite color.
Good luck with with your restore.

I've found that very few "purists" care what the color is, so long as it is a Honda color and the paint is nice. Around here, a "hammertone grey" 750 in perfect running condition can't pull in $500, while a rusty, barely-running K3 in a well-applied Planet Blue (K5 color) recently sold at over $3500 on CL.

I had the same problem as you, there is 3 years old.
I loved the color ruby red and gold stripes.
I did not like the colors of k4 and above all stripes.
So I paint ruby red and even the lighthouse beacon and legs like a k1.
Go for it..

Hey Bowswell - very nice job - I love the early paint schemes also.  Hard to believe those 2 pictures are the same bike.

Wow, this is exactly what I wanted to hear! Thanks guys!

Boswell, you did a great job. I'm eyeing the same finish myself. Very inspirational.

The funny part about this dilemma is that though I have a k4, the tank is from a k1.

I'll start a build thread later today. Thanks everyone! Glad this community is here , because I'm sure I'll have far more difficult questions coming up  ;D

I love the earlier paint schemes.   In fact every Honda that I've had in my possession has ended up with them, with one exception:  A 75 planet blue CB750.  Somehow, I really like that color combo.

The one in my avatar, although a bit off stock, even has the early stripes.    No problem at all selling it.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.
