How do I service and re-face 550 speedo & tach
« on: April 30, 2007, 06:49:06 AM »
I recently replaced my pooched tach with what looked like a nice unit from Ebay.
Shortly after installing it, noise started to emit from it. It sounds like gear whine or possably a dry bushing.

I've also noticed real nice gauge faces available for these units and thought I'd open it up to cure it of the ghastly whine and paste a new face on it.

Problem is that I cant see how these gauges are serviced.

Can you shed some light on this subject.

Thanks

Oops.

Just spent a little more time searching the archives. Lots on this topic.
Thanks for keeping the flame throwers down.

Cheers
Jimmy

The chrome band that holds the top and bottom together needs to be cut.  I just used a dremel and cut one line and it will fall right off, the top and bottom can then be seperated.

Here is a pic of mine, if you look towards to bottom you can see the cut I had to make:

If you go to Cheapo's site at www.anubiscycle.com he has a complete set of instructions (as well as selling the dials)

If you go with Anibus be sure that you contact the owner first.  He has auctions on ebay and I purchased a set for my 76 550K.  When I got my gauges tore down and went to install the new faces the holes didn't line up.  I guess there are some minor differences between the screw holes in the 550's and 500's.  The screw holes on my gauges are spaced wider center to center than the ones he is selling.  He is making it all good though and providing me with a set of faces that don't have the pre cut holes.  My experience with Anibus has been great and I wouldn't hesitate to use his products.

This is true.  I got the cb500 ones for my cb550 (pictured above).  I had to make new wider holes and covered the others up with the washers shown in the pic

Any info on what the "whine" was? I'm getting that noise out of my speedometer and I'm wondering if I'm gonna need a new cable because my guess is the noise is coming from the cable spinning in the housing.
