Battery question.
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:03:33 AM »
What would be the consequences of running a 12V 4AH battery in my 77 CB550F? Would it be ok for a stopgap until funds arrive or am I looking at some serious damage? TIA.

No idling, no lighting, no problem.

Oh, no electric start either.

It's 4AH. It's brand new in my garage and I can't afford 14AH at the minute. I was maybe hoping to use it to start my bike this weekend, for the first time in 20 years.  :-[

The bike won't be leaving my garage with this battery and the lights will never be on except to see if they work.

Maybe. I have seen 7 amps used in a 750. You can leave in the electric start but you most likely will not be able to use it as the motor will pull to much to allow the coils to charge properly, or saturate, if you are anal retentive.
You can use it to test lighting to make sure it works.
But if you are not riding with it, I don't see why it couldn't be used for testing.
However, if your bike is hard to start, the battery will go flat fairly quickly.

Car battery has been disconnected and ignored for 2 years. Need to get a charger and see If I can revive it.

After two years good luck :) If in the market for a battery and charger here is a good place to learn and buy from. I have used them and got the best of service.

I used a 3 Ahr lead-acid battery on my kick-start only 750 for years. As long as you don't use the electric starter, the 4 Ahr battery will work fine for testing. It won't damage anything.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
