CB750 K4 or 5 clutch basket removal
« on: February 21, 2012, 11:38:37 AM »
So I've unscrewed the special nut , tabbed washer and spring washer holding the clutch basket in but the basket won't come out. Am I missing a step or something? I thought getting the main nut off was the hard part but the basket won't budge. Is there an orientation I'm missing?

BTW, this is an open caucus I'm "practicing" on before I try it on the motor in the bike. And also the clutch springs that came out of this clutch are 1.38" long compared to the stock one of 1.21". The wire dia. in the spring is also lighter than stock. Are these after market springs?

The clutch should just pull out of the basket, might require a bit of wiggling.

Also, you may need a puller to remove the basket.

I had the same problem and from memory - I screwed the cover plate bolts (2 of) back in a few turns to give me 2 handholds to pull with...also useful for reinserting of the basket as it has a nasty habit of falling off at the back and not meshing together properly and not noticeable until u go to refit the cable and find nothing works.

OK thx. So if I go pull the actual clutch rather than playing with this half caucus, it may all be a non-issue.

Anyone know what the deal with these springs is?

btw, you don't actually have to pull the steel outer basket like I did just to replace the clutch plates.
I pulled mine out because I wanted to clean the sludge out from behind/under the clutch assembly.

Nope, don't know anything about the springs.
Check the plates when you get them out and see if they look original, could be the clutch was replaced sometime.

Ahhhh!, confusion reins. I'm actually only trying to get the clutch plates out so I'm trying to remove the inner basket or what Honda calls the outer.  ;D  And that's what won't budge.

Yeah, as was mentioned above put a couple of the bolts in and pull STRAIGHT out on those.
Obvious: those posts, being aluminum, can break off.

Since the springs aren't stock it's likely the plates were replaced and they may be a tight fit to the outer cage.

Thanks, I'll try that. I'm old and weak so probably won't break the posts but I'll be careful anyway. And since it may be an aftermarket clutch, I'm anxious to get the disks out to look at them now.

Anyone know what the deal with these springs is?

The CB750 K bikes had several part number revisions to the clutch springs during production. A general rule of thumb using your photo:

The K0 to K5 bikes use the long and skinny springs: 95014-75140

The K6 to K8 bikes use the short and fat springs: 22401-275-000

Back in the day ... a popular mod for hot rod engines was to install CB72 clutch springs: 22401-323-003

Thanks, I got it now.

And as far as my basket being stuck, I took your advice and made this handle to jerk it out and it just popped out.
