If someone already mentioned this, I missed it while reading the thread...

During the pistons stroke, it does not drop low enough in the cylinder to expose the rings. If it did, why do we need ring compressors? Clean her up, go for a ride! you will be fine. Does the white smoke happen every time you start? or just after sitting for a while? It's probably valve guide seals then if it does it every time. Not really a crisis, but you will want to take care of them at some point.

When did you get a 400F!? My friend just bought one, only 5,000 miles on it. It still has the original tires on the bike. Carb cleaning, battery and tires and it's on the road. Lucky bugger.

Oh and yes, I nabbed my Dad's shop while he was out of town for a month. He's back Saturday so I finished just in time!

It's actually my wife's, but I ride more than she does  ;D

Mine is pretty much an identical twin to the one your buddy bought. And I have another one sitting in my shed waiting for me as well (I've thought about building it up to eventually race in the lightweight bike class in Gimli. I didn't know it existed until now!).

What if it isn't a piston ring, but one of the half rings used in the transmission (index 1)

you can see the mark on the end of the piece of ring that gets installed up wards.

Since the po did rings, it is most likely a piece of the old rings that fell down there when the cylinders were lifted of the case.
