No it is not feasible. cannondale had nothing but trouble and I think most major manufacturers have toyed with this idea for just the same idea. ram air more horse power. good luck if youtryit I would be interested to hear the results as I am sure would honda etal...

Well, the first step to any invention is to get some supplies. Does anyone have any toasted heads floating around as doorstops that can handle a bit of beating up? I want to see what I can do about getting things off to a good start so two or three ought to be a good starting place. I can come up with shipping but not much for the heads so thats why I want dead heads. If you have one, or more, you want to get rid of, let me know. I looked in the local junkyards for 750 heads and they just smelt them down. They usually use any good heads for rebuilt engines, though they don't have many of those either.

PM me if you got any, and let me know what shipping is, how much you want for the head, and what form to pay in.

My zip code is 94947.

Peace and Long Rides,

Jeff

I've got a couple here you can have Jeff, but the shipping from Oz would be horrible!

Anyway, you are probably gonna want to turn the head AND cylinder block around to make it work mate, so what you need to do is attack the top of the crankcases, basically you'll need to cut the top out so you can flip the cylinder mounting pad around, and then weld it back in again.

Easier said than done of course, but probably easier than welding up all the stud holes in the head and trying to relocate them in a pretty crowded assembly. Just my two-penneth worth of course, so feel free to shoot me down, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

it's always a good idea to watch this video from time to time...

notice in the very first view of the bike - two carbs with velocity stacks hanging out in space...facing forward

apparently not the final, production configuration - they sell with a forward facing pod filter of some kind

I see we got into ram air. Does anyone have any information on Leon Moss (LEDAR Racing Developments) I know he's dead (hanggliding accident?) but he was developing Ram Air for Kawasaki when they first introduced it. It was FRESH AIR RAM TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS (or FARTS) for short.
I posted this on the Greenspun board a few years ago and did'nt get any info

What is the difference between a radial twin and a V-twin?  ??? ??? Or are they just trying to avoid the look-a-like syndrome as far as the motor goes?

Wouldn't you want the intake air to be as cold as possible?  It seems that heating up your intake would be counterintuitive and probably offset any gains you'd make through increasing cylinder pressure.  Anyway, as I'm sure others have gotten at, you might as well just use standard forced induction like a turbo or SC if you're going to go to the trouble of turning the engine around.  If you're going for the trick look though it doesn't matter what we think.  Heck, I've seen a dual-engine 4WD Hyundai Tiburon do a spinning burnout with the front and rear tires going in opposite directions.  Does that make any sense?  Not really, but it was cool nonetheless.  Bottom line: do what you want and people will respect it.

That is precisely what I want, intake air as cold as possible, and to get that air I need to get it from in front of the engine. I never considered ram air effect and at the speeds we are talking any effect would be negligible at best. I figure there might be a slight pressure increase due to the engine pushing air in front of it but again the pressure differential can't be very much to begin with compared to the pressure behind the head and cylinder jugs.

Peace,

Jeff

Not yet Terry, Don't even have a head yet. I've been too busy with work and trying to get by Rita running. Now, wouldn't you know it, she blew either the crank main seal or an oil passage in the head gasket, either way, ruined a $60 pair of shoes and she has no oil in her. Guess it's time for a full tear down.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Peace,

And that's why you should wear heavy leather boots mate, the oil keeps 'em nice and supple, ha ha! ;D

I like to think of a single-engine airplane like a Cessna when I read this thread. You have the airbox/air filter on the front,  shaped to get all kinds of air in there(I know the plane is going 130 mph, but still...), and if it's cold, it's a good thing. Cool air is denser that warm air, and gives better performance, especially in lower humidity conditions. I would like to see somebody attempt and succeed at making a front intake SOHC4...and post photos!

The idea of cold air for the intake is good, but surely the idea of blowing air into the carbs is not. The carbs rely on the low pressure generated in the throat (by venturi effect) to suck petrol from the jets to mix with the air passing through. If the air enters the carbs under pressure as they face forward this will prevent petrol from being sucked from the jets. This will bugger up the mixture and prevent firing.
If we look at supercharging, the supercharger is located between the carbs and the cylinder head so that the air is still sucked through the carbs , NOT blown through them.  Still, it would be an interesting experiment for anyone with the time, money and facility to do it.

I am just jumping into this discussion, but I understand that the #1 reason the carbs are in the back and the exhaust in the front is to cool the significantly hotter exhaust side.

I too have experimented (in my head) with reversing a head for all the reason already mentioned.  I think the easiest candidate would be some simple single- cylinder bike.    Dyno tests with fans could be done to see if there is any significant improvement.

All the bike companies have some smart people working for them, and the fact that this is not seen on production or factory race bikes says something.

I'm late to this too.

I'm more interested in just getting colder air into the carbs, seems like the intake on the back sucks
hot air to me. But, I've never put a temp gauge back there to see just what the air temp is.
I think an air box has been shown to produce more power on cars today than using
a cone style filter, though I use the later on my fiat and duct it from a cold air mounting
in the fender well (but it is fuel injected too). With the honda I wonder if just putting ducts to the side of the air box,
but not a snorkel turned into the wind, would allow colder air in but not forced air
since this has been pointed out to produce a lean out situation with carbs (glad that was pointed out too:))

I have talked faily extensively with a guy who uses a VERY long intake to super cool the air.  As I have to look the word "carburetor" up in the dictionary when I read it, I have no clue about what he tells me.  He does this on a V-twin, but the idea should work anywhere I would think... I'll see if I can find his e-mail address from a friend or something.

I'm not an engine designer but I do know a bit about the principle of the way it works.Jeff has a great idea of putting colder air in but Fang has a point about cooling the exhaust.I think I will just leave mine to the way Honda designed it and if someone really comes up with something else.....Maybe will give it a shot.
